Formed in 2013, Rae Sremmurd consists of two brothers, Khalif Brown and Aaquil Brown. Born in Whittier, California, the two grew up in Tupelo, Mississippi. Before becoming, Rae Sremmurd, Khalif and Aaquil went by, ‘Dem Outta St8 Boyz’. They started off by recording tracks and remixes and uploading them on social media websites such as Reverbnation and YouTube, in hopes of gaining recognition. They were able to capture the attention of P-Nasty, who invited them to come to Atlanta to record music.
The brothers visited Atlanta and recorded their debut single, ‘I Dip’, which was produced by Marz of the Eardrummers. They also recorded their sophomore track, ‘We’, through the same record label. Even though none of these tracks earned the brothers the fame they were aiming for, they were still offered a record deal by Ear Drummers Entertainment on 1st January, 2014.
Five months after this, Rae Sremmurd came forth with its debut major label single, ‘No Flex Zone’. Produced by Mike Will Made It, the song caused ripples in the hip hop industry. Several remix versions of the single featuring Pusha T, Kid Ink, Hardhead, Travis Porter and Nicki Minaj were released later on. The music video for ‘No Flex Zone’ came out on 11th August and featured comedian Mike Epps.
The single was able to gain a platinum certification, and made its way to several charts in America, Canada and Belgium. In the US, the song peaked at number eight on the Billboard Hot Rap Songs and at eleventh place on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Chart. Apart from this the track also made it to top fifty on the Billboard Rhythmic Chart and Hot 100 and Ultratop Flanders (Belgium).
Three months after the release of this successful number, Rae Sremmurd released their second single via Ear Drummers Entertainment. Titled, ‘No Type’, this song was also certified platinum by the RIAA. If this wasn’t enough, ‘No Type’ landed in second place on the Billboard Hot Rap Songs Chart and in third place on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Chart. Apart from this, the single also made its way to charts in the UK, Belgium, Canada, Finland, Denmark and France.
Following the success of these two singles, Rae Sremmurd released their debut studio album, ‘Sremmlife’ on 6th January, 2015. Produced by Mike Will Made It, P-Natzy and the Brown brothers, the record featured guest artists Big Sean, Nicki Minaj, Young Thug and Jace of Two-9. Consisting of eleven tracks, the album topped the Billboard Top Rap and Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Charts and landed on fifth place on Billboard 200. It also gained success in UK, peaking at 24th place on UK R&B Chart.
