Radu Lupu is undoubtedly one of the most respected and important musicians of our times. He comes from a generation of pianists who were revivalists. He is popular for his reflection and interpretation of the most classical instrumentals to date. Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert and Brahms have inspired him all along. Lupu has worked mostly along the lines of these maestros and has excelled like none other in his domain. This Romanian artist was a music prodigy; at the age of six he started learning the piano under Lia Busuioseanu. When he was twelve he was all set to make a mark in public. Lupu’s public debut was a full length program that featured his original creations. His signature music, style and confidence inspired many local music critics. Cella Delavrance and Florica Muzicescu became his mentors who helped him develop more skill and sense of music. In l96l the Moscow State Conservatory awarded Lupu his first scholarship. He went off to Moscow where he learnt music formally with name like Heinrich Neuhaus and Stanislav Neuhaus.
Moscow Conservatory became Radu Lupu’s home for seven years. It inspired and influenced every bit of his personality and music stance. In l967 he got his first prize at the Enescu International Competition. He also won competitions like the Leeds International and Van Cliburn. The Italian Critics’ Association awarded him the Abbiati Prize in 1989 and also in 2006. In 2006, the Premio Internazionale Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli Award was given to him.
Winning these prestigious awards made Mr. Lupu’s one of the foremost pianists in the world. He started performing regularly as a recitalist and soloist. Initially his live performances were restricted to Romania and Europe; however in a very short time he managed to showcase his work at many musical capitals of the world. Lupu also performed at major music festivals across Europe and North America.
Radu Lupu has performed with many orchestras as a guest artist all over the world. The Berlin Philharmonic remains his most visited one. He performed with it in l978 at the Salzburg Festival. Lupu has also been with the Vienna Philharmonic and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Many mainstream orchestras in London have also staged his performances.
Lupu ‘s first ground breaking performance in the US was with the Cleveland Orchestra in 1972. This performance was under Daniel Barenboim and got great reviews from public and critics. The Chicago Symphony also performed with Lupu, the Symphony was headed by Carlo Maria Giulini. The New York Philharmonic and Mr. Lupu also performed together many times. His performances here led him to perform at the topmost American orchestras.
Of all Lupu’s works, twenty recordings that he did for the London/Decca outshine the rest. Other highlights of his profile are full length Beethoven concertos that he performed with Zubin Mehta and the Israel Philharmonic. The artist also performed with Szymon Goldberg; this show featured Mozart piano sonatas and violin works. Radu Lupu also engaged in making many solo recordings of works of Brahms, Beethoven and Schubert. Some of the releases which feature this line of work are his Grammy winner Schubert’s Sonatas, D. 960 and 664 and the Edison Award winning Kinderszenen, Kreisleriana and Humoresque, by Schumann.
Lupu collaborated with Murray Perahia and Soprano Barbara Hendricks for two recordings. Another important collaborative effort by Lupu came out in 1998; it was a disc of Schubert works that he performed with Daniel Barenboim. His collaboration with Szymon Goldberg was released in 2001 after Radu stopped recording in the late nineties.
This season Lupu’s concerto commitments will keep him engaged the whole year long. He will be performing with the Orchestre de Paris, the Luxemburg Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Santa Cecilia Orchestra, St Louis Symphony, the Boston Symphony, the Mozart Orchestra Bologna and the Berlin RSB.
The season is also loaded with a number of Beethoven Piano Concertos with the Finnish Chamber Orchestra. Lutu will also be performing recitals at Aix-en-Provence, Bergamo Festival, Vicenza, Brescia and in a couple of cities of the US. His tenth tour of Japan is also a big attraction for the artist’s fans over there. Korea will also see the artist debut performance in this season.
