Radio One Fest is a music festival organized by Radio 1, a station of BBC. It is held once every year in the United Kingdom. Each year it is hosted by a different city of the UK. It is the biggest music event of the free ticket kind in Europe. It was initially named “One Big Weekend”, but its current name is “BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend”. However, its name has been slightly altered for this year, so for 2012 it is going to be called “Radio 1’ Hackney Weekend”.  
 
Radio One Fest is a successor of the Radio 1 Roadshow which used to tour the country every summer from the year of 1973 right into the 1990s. The roadshow was then converted to “One Big Sunday” which used to take place twice a year. Dance and music would be held on every Saturday and the bands would be showcased on every Sunday during the months of July and August. The preferable site for the event used to be a beach or a large park. It was also non-ticketed which attracted so many people that the venue used to outflow with them. One such example is the show held at Falkirk in the year 1999. It was bombarded with more than 500,000 people which was ten times the expected number. Some had to be turned away. In 2005, the show changed into its current form. Both days of the weekend were dedicated to performances of the bands. Its form is changing yet again in 2012. Its crowd capacity is being limited to fifty thousand. The event will take place on the third weekend of June in Hackney as the change is name above suggests. The reason for these changes is to become part of the London 2012 Festival which is a build up to the great event of 2012 London Olympics.
 
Some of the ticketing rules have also been changed for Radio One Fest this year. The Radio One Fest tickets are not going to be entirely free. You will have to pay a small booking fee. They are also now restricted two tickets per person.  Before 2006, they were distributed at booths in the host city on a first come first serve basis. But now it has changed since the event is attended by a large number of non-locals. The Radio One Fest tickets are now distributed through an online lottery carried out on Radio 1’s website. From 2012 onwards, people vying for the tickets would be required to submit passport size photographs in order to enter the lottery.  Majority of the tickets are sold to the locals of the hosting city so the competition is even tighter amongst the non-locals.
 
The lineup for the 2012 Radio One Fest consists of the some of the bigwigs of music industry. The main stage will showcase the following bands: Ed Sheeran, Example, Rizzle Kicks, Leona Lewis, Florence and the Machine, Jay-Z, Rihanna, Tinie Tempah, Jessie J, Professor Green and Kasabian. The performers occupying the In New Music We Trust Stage will be Jack White, Lostprophets, The Maccabees, Delilah, Michael Kiwanuka, Rita Ora, and The Ting Tings. The 1Xtra Stage will serve as platform for hot celebrities like Sean Paul, Flo Rida, will.i.am, D'banj, Trey Songz, Tinchy Stryder, Chip, Boy Better Know, DJ Fresh, Emeli Sandé, and Dappy. The dance arena will showcase Swedish House Mafia, Calvin Harris, Eric Prydz, Nero, Annie Mac, and deadmau5. On Saturday, these four stages will be headlined by Jay-Z, Jack White, Sean Paul, and Swedish House Mafia. On Sunday, the same stages will be headlined by Rihanna, Chase & Status, Nas, and David Guetta respectively.
