Rachelle Ferrell has also been highly successful in the more mainstream R&B, pop, classical and gospel music genres. She began singing at the age of six, developing a rare six octave range. She then went on to learn to play the piano and violin in the classical style, performing professionally as a young teenager. She went to study at the famous Berklee College of Music where she learned musical arrangement and further improved her singing skills. She also learned songwriting and went on to teach music with Dizzy Gillespie at the New Jersey Council on the Arts.
In 1975, she began singing for many famous artists including George Duke, Lou Rawls, Vanessa Williams and Patti LaBelle. Her first album, First Instrument, was released in 1990 in Japan and then in 1995 in the US. The album featured bassists Tyrone Brown, drummer Doug Nally and pianist Eddie Green. A number of jazz musicians also performed including trumpeter Terence Blanchard, pianist Michel Petrucciani, bassist Stanley Clarke, saxophonist Wayne Shorter, pianist Gil Goldstein, bassist Kenny Davis and keyboardist Pete Levin.
Rachelle Ferrell’s debut album featured covers of famous standards such as Cole Porter’s What Is This Thing Called Love, Sam Cooke’s You Send Me and Rodger & Hart’s My Funny Valentine. Her second album was also released in 1990 and titled Somethin’ Else. It was followed two years later by a self-titled release and then an album in 2000 titled Individuality.
