Rachael Yamagata was born in Arlington, Virginia and started showing an interest in music at an early age. Her family encouraged her to sing and praised her for the natural talent that she possessed. Her passion for music was further ignited when she started playing the piano. She got enough training on the piano to start playing as a professional pianist. After Rachael Yamagata entered the music industry she tried her luck with songwriting as well and once again discovered that she was extremely skilled in this art as well.

Rachael Yamagata started her professional music career with a band named "Bumpus", which was based in Chicago. Her role as the lead vocalist of the band gave her the exposure and the break she needed to make it big in the music industry. Her time with the band gave her a lot of confidence and refined her ability to play live on stage and face large crowds in a concert. She spent six valuable years with "Bumpus". She toured with the band to various cities, writing and recording new songs and gaining new experiences. After she had spent a considerable time with the band, she decided to part ways with it and decided to pursue a full time solo career in music.
The artist managed to get a two record deal signed with Arista’s Private Music and released her first Extended Play "Rachael Yamagata" in 2003. The following year, Rachael Yamagata’s first studio album "Happenstance" was released. For a debut album, "Happenstance" made quite a stir in the music scene and got Rachael Yamagata the popularity she deserves. The album had a great bluesy sound which was complimented by some wonderful, smoky guitars and deep beats from the drums. The album also contains beautiful ballads which are accompanied only by the piano. The lyrics of the songs touch the listeners at a personal level and surprised the critics with their maturity and depth.
Rachael Yamagata’s second album came out after a four year gap. "Elephants...Teeth Sinking Into Heart" was released in 2004 and once again silenced the critics with the brilliant music that it contained. The album showed a marked growth in Rachael Yamagata in terms of music, a fact that earned her even more respect in the eyes of her contemporaries. The romantic and soulful ballads of the albums made the album the huge success that it was.
The third album by Rachael Yamagata "Chesapeake" is said to be her best work to date. The album’s release in 2011 took the artist to even greater heights. The album contains Rachael Yamagata’s trademark piano ballads, but some of the songs also lean towards punk, pop rock, lending the album a new sound and style.
