Yolanda Adams was born in 1961, and raised in Houston, Texas, United States. She had been interested in gospel music ever since she was a kid. After she graduated from Texas Southern University, she began to work as a teacher in a school, but soon gave up that job, realizing that her true passion lay in music. She became the lead singer of the Houston's Southern Inspirational Choir. The choir was formed under the direction of Shirley Joiner, Brenda Waters and Carl Preacher, and in affiliation with the Church of God in Christ. In the year 1982, the choir issued a song titled For My Liberty, with Yolanda Adams as the lead singer. The song went on to become a considerable success, and gave Adams a large amount of exposure.
 
Shortly afterward, Yolanda Adams was asked to perform for a song titled My Trust Lies in You, which was part of an album called Give Us Peace, and was released by the Edwin Hawkins Music and Arts Seminar Choir. Due to her performance in both songs, she managed to attract the attention of the recording label named Sound of Gospel, which offered her a recording deal for her own albums. She accepted the offer and went to work on her debut album. The album was released in the year 1987 and was named Just As I Am. It went on to become a success, and Adams gained a large amount of fan following all over the country. Due to her performance on her debut album, she was discovered was keyboardist/ producer Ben Tankard in the year 1990, who offered her a recording contract with his independent company, Tribute Records. Adams accepted the deal and went to work on her second album.
 
Yolanda Adam's sophomore album was named Through the Storm and it went on to become a hit, increasing her fan base all over the world. Next, she released an album called More Than A Comedy in the year 1995. The album featured various other musicians as well, such as BeBe Winans, O' Landa Draper, and Ben Tankard. Her first ever music video also emerged from this album, and it was made for her single titled Gotta Have Love. This talented singer has so far managed to win four Grammy Awards, three BET Awards, one Soul Train Music Award, four of the Gospel Music Association's Dove Awards, sixteen Stellar Gospel Music Awards and various more as well.
