The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra was founded by Frederic Archer and the Pittsburgh Arts Society five years before the beginning of the twentieth century. A number of Boston Symphony Orchestra musicians joined him in this endeavor, performing their first concert in 1896. Two years later, Victor Herbert took over as the head of the orchestra, expanding its presence and taking it on several tours. Six years later, Emil Paur joined the orchestra and attracted the likes of Richard Strauss and Edward Elgar as guest conductors.

In 1910, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra was closed due to no financial means to sustain it. Sixteen years later, its members started it again, supporting it with their own money, lead by Elias Breeskin. Antonio Modarelli joined the orchestra as conductor and in 1937, Otto Klemperer helped bring international acclaim to the orchestra by reorganizing it. From then onwards, a period of advancement began and it has continued to this day.

The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra saw many more iconic music directors, such as Fritz Reiner, who introduced many works in the repertoire and made recordings of music by Richard Strauss, Mozart and Bela Bartok. William Steinberg took the orchestra to Europe and Andre Previn introduced it to a national audience with the first performance on TV, on the PBS TV series Previn and the Pittsburgh. Mariss Jansons was the music director until 2004. From 2005 onwards, the orchestra had no music director, relying on artistic advisor Sir Andrew Davis.

In 2007, Manfred Honeck became the ninth music director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Three years earlier, it had taken part in the famous and historic event, Papal Concert of Reconciliation. This event marked the first time an orchestra from the US performed at the Vatican for the Pope. This was a special concert that reached out to three faiths; Islam, Christianity and Judaism, and was created and conducted by Sir Gilbert Levine. It was seen live by an audience seven thousand large and broadcast globally. It was also released on DVD and was hailed all over the world as a monumental event in music and in history.

It also lead to the symphony orchestra starting its Music for the Spirit program, under Sir Gilbert Levine. This is thus the first symphony orchestra from the US to perform for the Pope at the Vatican, a mind blowing event that makes its concerts ones to order Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra tickets for.

The seventy five year old performing arts facility that is known to hold over two hundred shows on an annual basis is Pittsburgh Cultural District’s most cherished landmarks. The foundation of the centre was laid in 1926 when business magnate, Marcus Loew sponsored its construction. With the aim of inaugurating a grand movie palace that will be one of the top attractions in Pennsylvania, the fifty foot high building was designed by Rapp & Rapp Architects. Its completion boasted an impressive Venetian ceiling, with marble staircases, ornamental columns, silk draping and crystal chandeliers. The facility was originally named the Loew’s and United Artist’s Penn Theatre, till it was sold to the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation in 1964. The charity organization acquired the movie theatre with the aim of providing the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra with a new home.

With reconstructive works that went on for five years, the Loew’s and United Artist’s Penn Theatre was reopened as the Heinz Hall for the Performing Arts in 1971. Four stories were added to the fifty foot high ceiling and the front and back of the building was extended as well. The aim of the renovation was to convert the movie theatre into a state of the art concert hall, equipped with acoustical elements, rehearsal rooms and dressing areas. The Heinz Foundation sponsored another renovation in 1995 that added an orchestral shell and acoustic risers, conditioning improvements and interior transformations. Such improvements have raised the facility’s worth to a massive six digit number of 6.5 million dollars.

The Heinz Hall for the Performing Arts is announcing yet another spectacular display of talent by inviting jazz musician, Kenny G to perform alongside Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Kenneth Bruce Gorelick, popularly known as Kenny G will be dominating the stage with the saxophone at the forthcoming show.
