Pink Martini is small orchestra ensemble with only thirteen members, and is based in Oregon since it was created in 1994 by piano player Thomas Lauderdale. The orchestra performs from a mix of several genres including lounge music, latin, old-fashioned pop and jazz.  Its current lineup includes twelve instrumentalists namely China Forbes, Robert Taylor, Gavin Bondy, Brian Lavern Davis, Derek Rieth, Martin Zarzar, Phil Baker, Timothy Nishimoto, Nicholas Crosa, Pansy Chang, Dan Faehnle and Maureen Love. The group occasionally tours with an additional string section, playing from an array of multilingual tracks, performing in concert venues alongside symphony orchestras across Asia, Europe, Northern Africa, Middle East, North America and New Zealand. The group’s presentation of various cultural mixes has brought Pink Martini tickets more fame among high end, classical music fans.

Thomas Lauderdale met Pink Martini’s current lead vocalist China Forbes at Harvard. While he was a student of history, Forbes studied painting and English literature. As a hobby the two would sing Verdi and Puccini’s arias and covers by Barbra Streisand in the college dorms, exploring their collaborative efforts. Some years after graduating, Forbes began playing guitars and writing songs for a folk-rock project during which time Lauderdale offered her to join the band. The two started songwriting together, releasing their first track Sympathique in 1997, which became a big instant hit in France, prompting a nomination from Victoires de la Musique Awards in 2000 in the category of Song of the Year. The song was later released in the band’s debut album by the same name, which came out on the group’s self-owned label Heinz Records. The group released its second studio offering in 2004, titled Hang on Little Tomato, followed by another album in 2007, Hey Eugene.
 
In Europe, Pink Martini debuted in 1997, at the renowned Cannes Film Festival, following which it played its very first orchestral performance in 1998 alongside Oregon Symphony with Norman Leyden as the director. The band has since played more than thirty orchestras all around the globe, which also includes many collaborative performances with another American orchestra group known as the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Together the two ensembles have performed at well-established venues such as the Boston Pops, Hollywood Bowl, London’s BBC Concert Orchestra, and at Kennedy Center with the National Symphony. Other performances by the band include the big opening event of an all new Walt Disney Concert Hall by Los Angeles Philharmonic, which was designed by Frank Gehry. The event gathered a large audience on the New Years Eve in 2003, 2004 and 2008.  
 
Pink Martini has played a couple of sold-out performances in Carnegie Hall, followed by an opening party for the newly renovated Modern Art Museum in the city of New York. In 2008, the group also performed on the Governor’s Ball on the eightieth Annual Academy Awards, after which it headed to Australia to play on the opening of the Sydney festival. On the New Year’s Eve in 2005, the group played live in Portland at Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, and this performance was given a live broadcast in the program Toast of the Nation by National Public Radio channel.  Moreover, the performance was recorded in a collaborative deal with Oregon Public Broadcasting, for a live DVD release and further broadcasting on French television and US public broadcasting.  The DVD arrived in the market with the title Discover the World: Live in Concert, and comprised of not just the complete concert but also a few vignettes along with a documentary on the group’s history.
 
Pink Martini has performed and collaborated with several prominent musical acts such as Jimmy Scott, DJ Johnny Dynell, Hiroshi Wada, conductor and clarinetist Norman Leyden, DJ Dimitri, Michael Feinstein, Georges Moustaki, Chavela Vargas, Jane Powell, Henri Salvador, Carol Channing and some NYC drag queens. In June 2007, the group made an appearance on a BBC music program called Two Later with Jools Holland, two weeks after which they played Hey Eugene while making an appearance on Late Show with David Letterman.
