Pierre Hebert was born and raised in Montreal, Canada. He was tremendously influenced by animation movie makers such as Norman McLaren as well as Len Lye. Hebert successfully directed his first few movies independently at the time when he was a student at the University of Montreal studying Anthropology. From 1965 till the end of 1990, he worked at the well reputed National Film Board of Canada. Soon after that, Hebert pursued his career as an independent filmmaker as well as an artist. For three years, from 1996 until 1999, he began working as a producer as well as a director of the studio of the French Program of the NFB known as Animation/Youth studio.
A few of Pierre Hebert’s early movies were quite well known for the abstracts that he used to add in the movies initially as they were experimental projects. He dealt with the perception phenomena. Although he retained his unique experimental approach to movie making, as time progressed Hebert’s movies turned out to be engaged in topics that revolved around society as well as politics ("Entre Chiens et Loup" translated at Memories of War). Then he ventured into movie making that involved inter-disciplinary projects such as "Etienne et Sara", various songs and also dances of the more inanimate world, The Metro, Adie Bipedes, O Picassso-Tableaux, La Lettre d’Amour etc.
From 1983, Pierre Hebert was seen taking part in some magnificent live performances with various musicians such as Robert M. Lepage and Rene Lussier, Jean Derome , Bob Osterag and Fred Firth. He also worked in some live acts with acclaimed choreographers like Rosalind Newman, Ginette Laurin, Jean Marc Matos and Louise Bedard. During the 1980’s, Hebert’s movies began evolving out of the multi- disciplinary projects and began working on monuments as well as other historic places. This had been an interest of his for a very long time. He mentioned in an interview that working with monuments and places that had historical intrigue was a dream of his from his early movie making days as it involved action shooting.
As an artist and a movie maker, Pierre Hebert has been experimenting to great lengths in his career which might have seemed risky to many but for Hebert they all worked. From the time when he released his first movie in 1962 to finding interest with the animation technology and also developing live performing curiosity in the 1980s, Hebert finally created something the world would be marveled at. He developed the idea of novel form of live performances which would involve the concept of "animation" which would happen live at events. He successfully scratched directly on a film reel loop as it was rolling on a projector and with the improvisation of music and dance he created something entirely new for live audience at shows to experience. At the moment Pierre Hebert is spreading his live animation projects out by utilizing computers and various other technologies. In August 2010, Hebert received the honorary professorship at the popular Emily Carr University of Art and Design which is in Vancouver.
