Prior to getting in the limelight with his current moniker, Houck initially started off his career as a musician under another pen name, Fillup Shack. As Shack, he ventured in to the music industry as a recording artist when he started working on his album by the title of Hipolit. The album was released independently later in 2000. Following the release of his album, Fillup Shack went on a concert tour all across England and Spain where he drew positive and favorable reviews to his music. Soon after, Houck changed his stage name to Phosphorescent and released a full-length LP by the name of A Hundred Times or More back in 2003. The LP was released by Warm Records, an Athens Georgia based record label. The LP received four out of five stars by Allmusic. With his debut LP, Phosphorescent majorly drew positive reviews both from fans and the critics. Following the release, and live concerts the number of his fans considerably increased.
The following year on June 8, Phosphorescent came up with an E.P titled the Weight of Flight which was also released on Warm Records, and was then followed by his second full length studio album called Aw Come Aw Wry. The album was released on Misra Records, and it was the group’s first and the only album on Misra. The album was Phosphorescent’s first studio work that garnered critical acclaim and mainstream popularity. The album received positive reviews by both Pitchfork Media and Allmusic. The album is considered to be the first step that the group took towards embedding its name as one of the renowned indie folk acts of our time.
Afterward the group signed a record deal with Dead Oceans and released its follow up album called Pride. The album came out in 2007 and easily attracted favorable reviews from the critics. On the Stylus Magazine’s list of Best Albums for the year 2007, Pride was ranked at the #12 spot. Apart from that it also received 8.0 ratings from the Pitchfork Media and four out of five stars from Tiny Mix Tapes. It also featured group’s one of the most renowned hit singles called Wolves which was also featured in a movie called Margin Call which came out in 2011 starring Jeremy Irons and Kevin Spacey.
In 2009 Phosphorescent released a tribute album for Willie Nelson titled To Willie, on which the group paid its homage to the contributions that Willie Nelson made to the music industry. The album featured some of the greatest hits that came from Nelson. In 2010 the group came up with Here’s to taking it Easy which peaked at #8 spot on U.S Heatseekers Albums. Following that is the group’s most recent studio release called Muchacho that has become the group’s first ever charting album which charted on both UK Albums Chart as well as Billboard 200. The album was released to critical acclaim, and currently the group is on tour in support of its new material. So if you wish to catch it live, do so with Phosphorescent tickets.
