Phoenix is a group that excels at reproducing the slick sounds of the mid-70s California pop and then merging it with the modern music. They grew famous by artfully mixing different elements of disco, pop and rock together. The group is now currently on tour and will soon be bringing all the excitement of its live shows to North America. So, get your Phoenix tickets and watch them perform in person.
The Formation of Phoenix
In the 1990s, three school friends, Thomas Mars (Vocalist), Deck d’Arcy (Bassist) and Chris Mazzalai (Guitarist) started performing together. The trio then decided to take music seriously and named their group Phoenix. That was after they recruited Mazzalai’s brother, Laurent Brancowitz in 1995. The quartet then began to play music in different bars around France, covering the songs of legendary acts like, Prince and Hank Williams.
They caught the attention of a Paris based record company, Source Records who signed them. They got to know their label mates, Air very well and also played as their backing band when they made multiple appearances on UK television.
Phoenix issued their first two singles in 1999 titled, Party Time and Heatwave. The group then dropped its third single, Too Young. The track marked their first single to chart, landing at the ninety seventh spot in France. It also featured in American romantic comedy films, ‘Lost in Translation’ and ‘Shallow Hal.’ It also appeared on their debut studio effort, ‘United’ which came out on June 12, 2000. The record was composed of ten tracks and collected positive reviews from both American and European publications.
Climbing To Success
After a four-year break, Phoenix returned with new music in the form of their second studio album, ‘Alphabetical.’ The record performed well in Europe, bringing them more success throughout the continent. It was preceded by a single, Everything is Everything which featured on the video game, ‘Guitar Hero on Tour: Decades.’
It also contained a track, Victim of the Crime which was used by Hedi Slimane as the soundtrack for a show by Dior Homme. Following the release of the album, the group set out on tour, performing 150 dates in three continents. They also came out with their first live album, ‘Live! Thirty Days Ago’ on November 8, 2004.
Following the conclusion of their, ‘Alphabetical Tour,’ Phoenix flew to Berlin where they hit the Planet Roc Studios to work on their third studio record. On May 8, 2006, the group churned out the lead single from their upcoming album, Long Distance Call which was covered by the Grammy winning American band, Paramore on a French television show, ‘Taratata.’ A few days later, ‘It’s Never Been Like That’ hit the shelves and made Pitchfork’s list of the, ‘Top 50 Albums of 2006.’
Entering the American Markets
Phoenix’s music finally began to get some airplay in the United States when they released their fourth studio album, ‘Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix’ on May 25, 2009. The record entered the Billboard 200 at the thirty seventh spot and was also certified gold in the U.S, Australia and Canada. In addition, it was included in Rolling Stone’s list of, ‘The 25 Best Albums of 2009’ and gave a platinum selling single, 1901 which topped the Alternative Songs chart.
The group kept their momentum going and their popularity in the States began to skyrocket when their fifth studio effort, ‘Bankrupt!’ came out on April 22, 2013. The record turned out to be their highest charting effort in the country, reaching fourth spot on the Billboard 200. It was supported by three singles out of which, Entertainment appeared on the film, ‘Now You See Me.’
In the summer of 2017, Phoenix spawned their sixth studio record, ‘Ti Amo.’ It was placed at the forty third spot on Consequence of Sound’s list of the, ‘Top 50 Albums of 2017’ and peaked at the seventh spot on the Top Rock Albums.
