The Phish journey is simple yet so different. The band became a huge phenomenon in 1990's, however they have been in the scene since 1980's. Phish has its roots in Burlington, Vermont. It was in 1983 at the University of Vermont when vocalist and guitarist Trey Anastasio collaborated with guitarist Jeff Holdsworth, drummer Jon Fishman and bassist Mike Gordon to form a band. In the initial years, Phish concentrated on jamming and playing gigs at small venues. Holdsworth left the band in 1986 while Page McConnell had already joined the lineup as keyboardist. The band's first studio effort came in 1988 titled Junta. Lawn Boy followed in the fall of 1990. While the first was self-released cassette the band sold during their live shows, the second was never distributed as the recording company Rough Trade went bankrupt.

While the bad luck seemed to strike Phish in terms of album sales, they were slowly increasing their listenership through live concerts. After all, no band sans recording contract had ever sold two consecutive nights at San Francisco's Great American Music Hall, but Phish did so in 1991 compelling famous record label Elektra to sign them.

A Picture of Nectar became Phish's first release with Elektra. Released in 1992, the album was followed by re-release of Junta and Lawn Boy. Phish remained a prolific music act throughout the 1990's, releasing one album after another. Their fourth album, Rift came in 1993 followed by Hoist in 1994. The song Down with Disease from this album became their first ever video. Albums like Crimes of the Mind, Billy Breathes, Story of the Ghost, Slip, Stitch & Pass and Farmhouse were subsequent releases. The recent studio releases of Phish include The Siket Disc, Round Room, Undermind and Party Time. While the band had earlier remained inactive for some time, they officially called it quits in 2004, and performed what was then known as their final concert, Coventry. Many termed it the end chapter of Phish's craze who by then had became one of the top ten grossing live acts of North America.

Though the breakup did not affect their studio releases and solo projects of Phish members, their fans hugely missed the charm the magic the awesome quartet used to create together on stage. This forced the group to reunite and they made some combined appearances in 2008 followed by reunion tour in 2009.

Throughout their career, Phish continue extensive touring routine, and the success they found on road was never matched by their album sales. The band's live craze was captured in the form of many live albums; the platinum certified A Live One, Hampton Comes Alive, New Year's Eve 1995 - Live at Madison Square Garden, Live in Brooklyn, Colorado '88, Vegas 96 and At the Roxy at some of them.

Phish is often compared with Grateful Dead. This is because of the similarity in their sound and claim to fame. Their sound is often described as alternative rock and unique rock & roll that cover elements of jazz, pop, country and folk. Their approach to the musical career was also similar and they concentrated more on concerts than albums. If members of Phish have to credit something for their fame, they would credit that to their live shows. Throughout their career, Phish remained huge concert idols, a feat they still maintain with ease. The band has performed in countless sold out concerts, world tours and festivals and their organizers earned millions from the stupendous ticket sales.
