Phillip Chapman Lesh, popularly known as Phil Lesh, is also the leading and permanent member of the band "Phil Lesh and Friends". Phil started playing violin at the age of eight and took up trumpet when he was only fourteen. In high school, he took proper music lessons and explored avant-grand classical and jazz music. His first official music involvement was in 1962 when he joined bluegrass banjo player, Jerry Garcia’s band "The Warlocks". After Phil became part of the band, it was renamed as "Grateful Dead", and Phil’s association continued with it for more than three decades, up till 1995 when the once amazing group disbanded.
After a three years’ break, Phil again returned to music in 1998 when he started on his project "Phil Lesh and Friends". Bringing together some of the best performers and musicians in the realm of live music, Phil was able to keep his music popular. He consistently put together new artists and bands in order to spread the music of the Grateful Dead. Some of the stars who have been a part of this project are David Nelson, John Molo, Greg Osby, Ryan Adams, Bill Payne, Paul Barrere, Chris Robinson and many more.
