California born and raised Phil Lesh is perhaps most recognized for his three-decade long stint with the Grateful Dead. Influenced by jazz and classical music from an early age, Phil initially learned to play violin and trumpet. Under the tutelage of Luciano Berio at Mills College, he studied electronic music and composition.
Lesh joined the Grateful Dead during the 60’s and had a highly successful shift as their bassist. The rock band is considered one of the pioneers of the jam band scene. Grateful Dead sold over thirty-five million records and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2002, Lesh settled back after an extensive spell of touring to record a studio album. This was his first studio album recording since his days with the Grateful Dead. Their subsequent album, Live At The Warfield was released in 2006. The album included notable songs like “Donor Rap” and “I Know You Rider.” Over the next few years the band continued to issue various live albums.
