Peter came into fame in the 70s alongside his rock group, Bauhaus. The group was among the establishing acts of the Goth movement. The band’s theatrical aesthetics and woozy recording effects made them unique and one of the best in the 80s. Bauhaus also appeared in the opening sequence of the horror film, The Hunger performing one of their popular songs "Bela Lugosi’s Dead." After a few years, Peter left Bauhaus and formed a new band titled Dalis Car alongside Japanese bass player, Mick Karn. Together they released just one album and soon parted ways. Finally on his own, Peter Murphy decided to embark on a solo career and later enjoyed a massive fan following from around the world. His music mostly revolves around genres such as gothic rock, experimental, post punk and alternative rock. The combination of such genres with a baritone voice is something that is quite rare in the industry.
In the late 80s, Peter Murphy released his debut solo album, Should the World Fail to Fall Apart. The record hit the UK Album chart and received a positive feedback from the well-known internet publication Allmusic. His second studio album, Love Hysteria spawned two hits "All Night Long" and "Indigo Eyes." The songs received a lot of airplay on MTV and a critic from Underground described the album as "a coherent, tuneful package with tracks that are, on the whole, pretty listenable". Peter’s third album, Deep was the one that helped him garner mainstream success not just in UK but in several countries worldwide. The song "Cuts You Up" stayed on top of the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart longer than many of his previously released singles.
By the time he released his fourth studio album, Holy Smoke, Peter Murphy had developed an inclination towards Sufism. The artist even moved to Turkey due to which most of the songs had a Middle Eastern influence in them. Among his collection of amazing studio albums, the most recent one to date is Ninth. Several internet publications including Consequence of Sound, Allmusic and Pop Matters wrote positive reviews about the album. Some refereed to the album as fittingly modern and some stated it to be timelessly post-rock. Allmusic said "The Godfather of Goth" sounds like the genre’s savior here, coming on strong with those Bowie-sized aspirations and nailing that attractive Nosferatu-meets-Art-School style."
Since the late 90s, Peter Murphy has been touring both nationally and internationally. Murphy has found a huge fan following because of his deep and complex vocals that are one of the main reasons for his concerts being sold out events. Some of the credit also goes to his lyrical themes that are often religious or metaphysical. For the past three decades, Peter Murphy has been actively recording and performing. Other than pursuing a successful solo career, Peter has also worked alongside fellow musicians Leigh Nash, Sarah Fimm, Brendan Perry, and Nick Karn. The "Godfather of Goth" is not just popular for his own tracks; in fact, many people also like listening to his cover songs including "Space Oddity," "Hurt" and "Instant Karma!." The 55 year old rock vocalist is one of the most experienced Goth artists of the current scene. He is still on the go to entertain his fans to the fullest.
