Paula Julie Abdul was born to parents Lorraine M. and Harry Abdul on June 19, 1962 in San Francisco, California. She has an older sister named Wendy. Paula’s ancestors came from Ukraine and Russia and her family is of Jewish descent. She studied in Van Nuys High School and did her graduation from there in the year 1978. Paula enjoyed dancing since she was a kid. At a very early stage in her life, she had decided that she wanted to be a part of show business. She learnt jazz, ballet and tap. She was very inspired by Fred Astaire, Bob Fosse and Debbie Allen.
In school, Paula was a cheerleader and an honor student. She was fifteen years old when she got a scholarship to be a part of a dance camp. It was after this that Paula made an appearance in the musical titled Junior High School.
Paula then enrolled herself into California State University at Northridge, where she majored in broadcasting. Here she was selected from more than 700 candidates to become a cheerleader for the famous NBA team, the Los Angeles Lakers. Within the same year she became Lakers Cheerleading Squad’s head choreographer. It was at this point in time that she realized her true passion was dance. She soon quit university to pursue a professional career in the field of dance and choreography.
At one of the games, Paula Abdul caught the attention of the members of The Jacksons. She was immediately offered to choreograph their single Torture. The song was a big hit and after that, there was no looking back for the young artist.
During the 1980s, Paula got plenty of opportunities to choreograph music videos for various singers and celebrities. She had the honor of being the official choreographer for The Jacksons Victory Tour. In the year 1988, Paula Abdul released her first pop music album titled Forever Your Girl. It met favorable response from fans and critics alike. She followed up its success with her next music record Spellbound which also went on to become one of the best selling music albums of the time.
Paula’s 1995 album, Head Over Heels was released via Virgin Records. Some of the singles featuring on this collection became club anthems. Her dance-workout video Paula Abdul’s Get Up and Dance also came out that year and received highly positive response. Its follow-up second video Cardio Dance arrived three years later and that too was a big hit.
Paula then decided to take a break from the music industry and engaged herself in choreographing sequences for numerous film and theater productions such as American Beauty and Reefer Madness.
In the year 1998, Paula made an appearance in one of the episodes of Sabrina The Teenage Witch as well in the television film titled The Waiting Game where she played herself. The next year, she appeared in an episode of The Wayans Bros and Family Guy.
From the year 2002 to 2009, Paula was a judge alongside Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson on the popular show American Idol. During this time, the singer released her second greatest hits record Greatest Hits: Straight Up! and also launched her own jewelry line QVC.
In 2013, Paula was seen as a guest judge on the tenth season of the dance reality show called So, You Think You Can Dance? She also appeared on X Factor Around The World as a judge.
In 2017. Paula Abdul toured around the US as part of the "Total Package Tour" which also featured Boyz II Men and New Kids on the Block. She performed in more than 45 cities including New York’s Barclays Center and Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl.
During her illustrious career, Paula has sold more than sixty million album copies, given six number one songs, won a Grammy as well as two Emmy Awards.
