Named as the "Godmother of Punk", the work of Patti Smith is a blend of poetry and funk. Patti Smith is also known for her writing skills and she spared some time out of her singing career and dedicated it to writing. She came up with her first poetry book, Seventh Heaven in 1972, receiving flattering reviews. Patti also published two more collections "Witt" and "Early Morning Dream" that also gained a lot of popularity. In 1974, Patti along with her music group released a song "Piss Factory," which is now widely considered as the real "punk" single, garnering a sizeable grassroots following. She formed the Patti Smith Group in 1974 but it disbanded in 1979.
During her time with the band, Patti Smith released an album called Horses which came out in 1975. The record featured the iconic songs like "land Of A Thousand Dances" and "Gloria" that brought her critical and commercial success. Her songs are known for their manic energy, skillful wordplay and heartfelt lyrics. The band’s lineup consisted of drummer Jay Dee Daugherty, Lenny Kaye played guitar, bassist Ivan Kral and Richard Sohl played piano. In 1976, Patti Smith came up with her second record, Radio Ethiopia. With the release of its third album, Easter in 1978 the ensemble received its commercial breakthrough. The record spawned a hit single "Because the Night". It is her most widely known song that she co-wrote with Bruce Springsteen. The single reached at number thirteen on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the year 1979.
Patti Smith released Dream of Life in 1988 featuring one of the most iconic numbers by her, "People Have the Power." Patti Smith’s efforts earned her a number of honors along with a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2007. Not only Patti Smith gained popularity as a singer but she also received success in her writings. She won a National Book Award for her book called "Just Kids" in 2010. Patti Smith also won a Polar Music Prize in 2011.
