Rocking the 70s
The world of Jazz music saw a new name enter the scene in the 70s and he was none other than Pat Metheny. He debuted as a recording artist by releasing an album, ‘Jaco’ with Paul Bley, Jaco Pastorius and Bruce Ditmas in 1974. After a couple of years, in 1976, Pat came to prominence when he officially came out with his first studio record titled, ‘Brighter Size Life.’ The album charted at the twenty eighth spot on the US Jazz. His next record, ‘Watercolors’ saw the light of day in 1977 and was praised by AllMusic as it gave the album four stars out of five.
In the late 70s, Pat Metheny introduced his group to the world. The band captured the attention of the masses when its debut record, ‘Pat Metheny Group’ hit the stores in 1978. It charted on the Billboard 200. Just as the decade was about to end, Metheny’s third solo studio effort, ‘New Cahutauqua’ was released in 1979. In the same year, Pat Meheny Group put out their second record titled, ‘American Garage’ which climbed to the first spot on the Jazz Albums chart.
The famed jazz musician later decided to focus on his band. Soon, the group went on to rock the 80s by coming out with many successful records including, ‘Still Life (Talking)’ and ‘Letter From Home’ both of which achieved gold level sales in the United States. The records also earned the Pat Metheny Group a Grammy Award each in the category of, ‘Best Jazz Fusion Performance.’
Reaching new heights
In the early 90s, Pat Metheny came out with a couple of solo albums, ‘Secret Story’ and ‘Zero Tolerance for Silence’ in 1992 and 1994 respectively. The former record was awarded gold certification by the RIAA. In the same decade, Pat Metheny Group recorded three albums, ‘We Live Here,’ ‘Quartet’ and ‘Imaginary Day’ out of which the latter won them a Grammy Award for the ‘Best Rock Instrumental Performance.’ It was also certified gold by POL.
Pat Metheny kicked off the new millennium by treating his fans to new music. He along with his band released his first platinum selling effort titled, ‘Speaking of Now’ which came out in 2002. Since then, the artist has released many hit tunes. His last two solo records, ‘Orchestration’ and ‘What’s It All About’ both recorded gold level sales and enjoyed critical success.
