Papa Roach hit the music scene in January 1993 and includes talented artists like Jacoby Shaddix, Tobin Esperance, Jerry Horton and Tony Palermo. The band was initially formed by Jacoby Shaddix and Dave Buckner when they were still in the "Vacaville High School". The two were later joined by Ben Luther and Will James. The group’s first performance came about at the school's talent show, where they performed a version of the song "Fire" by Jimi Hendrix. Although they did not win the contest, their talents were recognized and appreciated by their peers. This gave the band members a lot of encouragement and confidence to perform live in front of a large audience.

It was in 1994 that Papa Roach released its first ever EP by the name of, "Potatoes for Christmas". For this album, the drummer Dave Buckner's position was taken up by Ryan Brown. After Buckner's return in 1995, they came up with a demo at the "Sound Farm Studios" called "Caca Bonita". In 1997, the band released its first full length studio album, "Old Friends from Young Years", which received a lot of critical acclaim. Again in 1998, the band came up with yet another EP titled, "5 Tracks Deep". This album particularly gained a lot of popularity selling more than 1,000 copies in the very first month of its release.

After its initial success, Papa Roach signed with the "DreamWorks" records in 1999 and recorded its first major debut album titled, "Infest". The album even included some of its old hit singles such as "Last Resort" and "Broken Home". Its debut album gave the band a lot of success internationally, which led to its first tour to the United Kingdom in 2000. Later, the band embarked on its "Ozzfest" tour, where it dazzled audiences in both the United States and the United Kingdom. After several performances in the United States, United Kingdom and Japan, the band then released its second album titled, "Born to Rock", which was later renamed to "Lovehatetragedy". Although the album did not break "Infest’s" record, it did manage to earn higher spots in both the United States and United Kingdom album charts. This album sold more than 500,000 copies and was certified Gold status. It is through "Lovehatetragedy" that Papa Roach turned its focus from rap metal to more alternative metal.

Papa Roach released its third studio album "Dancing In the Ashes", which was later renamed "Getting Away with Murder" in 2003. To promote this album, the band went on a small summer club tour. The single "Scars" from the album gained most popularity. Other singles were also well-received.  Over all, this album too, did not let the fans down and sold more than 1 million copies, earning Platinum status. Other studio albums by the band, "The Paramour Sessions", "Metamorphosis" and "The Connection" also mesmerized its millions of fans. With the album "Metamorphosis" the band altered much of its music style to "stuff that’s…harder and faster", as opposed to the style that it exhibited in the last albums.

For its hit albums and singles, Papa Roach has been nominated for two Grammy Awards in 2001 for "Best New Artist" and "Best Music Video" as well as an MTV Video Music Award in 2000 for "Best New Artist".
