Opeth is a swedish metal band from Stockholm, the capital city of Sweden. This band has been active in the world of metal music since 1990 and is today regarded as one of the greatest bands in metal. The band originally started out as a death metal band going on to play progressive metal music and today also plays a softer blend of progressive rock. It has been signed onto a number of record labels including Candlelight Records, Peaceville Records, Century Black Records, Music for Nations, Roadrunner Records and Koch Records. It has been associated with a number of bands in music, most notably Katatonia, Steel, Porcupine Tree and Bloodbath. Opeth’s lineup today consists of Mikael Åkerfeldt on lead vocals and playing the guitar, Martín Méndez playing the bass guitar, Martin Axenrot playing the drums and percussion, Fredrik Åkesson playing the guitars and on backing vocals, Joakim Svalberg playing keyboards, synthesizer, percussion and on backing vocals. As a band, it has been known to mix in music from many genres of music including jazz, classical, folk, blues and progressive creating tracks that are usually long but always exciting. Its music has also mixed much of metal with influences of death metal and black metal found. In terms of vocals, the bands uses both clean vocals and death growls, creating a sound that so far no other band in metal has been able to replicate. Opeth’s discography consists of ten studio albums, three live albums, three live DVDs and two boxsets. Its first album was released back in 1995 and titled as Orchid which was a big hit amongst metal fans. In 2008, the bands released one of their best albums to date, Watershed which was also a mainstream hit ranking high on the Billboard 200 charts in the US and first on the Finnish Albums chart during the first week of its release. It also has a rich history that began when it was founded by David Isberg as the vocalist and Mikael Akerfedt as the bassist. The name of the band was put after inspired by the novel The Sunbird by Wilbur Smith. More members soon joined the band and soon they began performing at local venues, writing new music and working on new songs. Though starting out with aggressive death metal, the band soon began blending in guitar harmonies and acoustic guitar sound that would later become the signature sound of Opeth.
In 1994, they were signed onto their first record label Candlelight Records and then released their debut album a year later. They then went on a tour of the UK and began working on their second album. This was titled as Morningrise and was released in 1996. It contained five long songs with the longest being over twenty minutes and was a massive hit commercially and critically with Allmusic ranking it at four stars. They then went on a UK tour and then a Scandinavian tour alongside Cradle of Filth. In 1997, the band was signed onto Century Media Records for the US. After touring, Opeth began work on yet another album which was released in 1998 and titled as My Arms, Your Hearse. It became their first global release with fans in the US particularly mesmerized by its unique sound.
Opeth’s latest album is 2011’s Heritage followed by a tour that spanned Europe and North America in support of this album. This tour went on to countries such as India, Turkey, Japan, South America, Greece and Sweden with the band also performing live at many festivals including the Summerstorm Festival.
