Ambitions - the Album
In 2017, One OK Rock has kept as busy as before and released its second international album titled ‘Ambitions’. The album features much new collaboration with a number of international artists, including Avril Lavigne and 5 Seconds of Summer. The variety presented in this album is remarkable: with ‘Bombs Away’ being the infectious and punchy youth anthem followed by the soulful ‘Jaded’ taking the energy down a notch. It is the perfect album to crack the West.
‘American Girls’ has particularly proven to be a successful seminal rite of passage for the Tokyo four-piece. It is raunchy and upbeat, much like ‘Bedroom Warfare’ both targeted at the American market. ‘American Girls’, in particular, has proven a great hit with their audiences given to its direct address.
The album consists a number of party anthems as well such as ‘We Are’, a song which has been exclusively written for the lighters-aloft festival. Similarly, ‘I Was King’ has symphonic undertones to it as well. The epic ‘Take What You Want’ featuring 5 Seconds of Summer is an epic closing track to the album and the most successful track on the record.
One OK Rock
The band was formed in 2005 when high school student Toru (guitarist) teamed up with Ryota (bassist), vocalist Taka (formerly from a boy band called NEWS) and another guitarist from San Francisco, Alex Onizawa (previously a fashion model). The band began performing in Tokyo and after a whole year, released their debut album. Self-titled, the EP was followed by a mini-album, Keep It Real by the end of 2006. After finding a permanent drummer in Tomoya, whom they had worked with on their first single, “Naihi Shinsho”, One OK Rock were able to get on the national radio and secure their first major-label deal. Amuse, the label that signed them, arranged the band’s first nationwide tour and a consequent release of their debut studio album, Zeitakubyou.
Two more LPs followed in 2008, after which Onizawa left the group. Toru took over his guitar duties and the group releaed their fourth feature album, Niche Syndrome in 2010. Zankyo Reference followed in 2011 followed by Jinsei x Boku. One OK Rock has kept fairly busy, despite their short career time-span, and ecured the opportunity to tour the U.S as a part of the Vans Warped Tour in 2014, followed by stadium hows in Japan and South America.Having gained an international audience, One OK Rock grasped the chance to launch itself in the US market, a transition that turned out smoother for the band’s members than they had anticipated. The result of this was their 2015 album “35xxxv” re-released in a deluxe English language edition after the band was signed by Warner Bros. This marked the band’s official launch in the United States. Taka’s flawless English accent assisted them in crossing over completely and their 2016 album Fueled by Ramen became an instant US hit.
