On the Waterfront is arranged annually and carries on its twenty year old tradition of a fundraising. The event started in Rockford in 1983 and became platform from where over a hundred charities benefited their respective causes. It started as a consequence of Rockford’ economic downturn and the city officials decided to have a Labor Day weekend celebration. With a fund of $15,000 the Rockford’s founding was made an official event for the first time. OTW continued to grow from then onwards and over the years and over the years emerged as one of Illinois' largest music festivals.
The festival has enjoyed big time success since its inaugural. The scale of this year’s festival could be judged by its expanse. It is arranged in twenty five city blocks, featuring over eighty performers that will take on five different stages. Apart from the main music there will be thirty special events and forty food vendors. The festival is made possible with the help of 4000 volunteers who come in to support on the festival days. The event and has been able to generate over ten million dollars over the period since it starts. It has benefit causes of over 300 non-profit organizations.
In 2010, the OTW introduced a very interesting film festival. This is now a regular feature of the OWT. The first festival was held at the Sullivan Theatre and featured a number of film activities and exhibits from short film to local, regional and foreign film screening and a guest speaker sessions. The fest became an epitome for Stateline area filmmakers; for it presented films via inventive visions. Moreover, the fest has sustained a huge variety of films ranging from comedy to animation, science fiction and documentaries etc.
The music is surely a big attraction for the people coming to the festival. However, the film premieres, especially the guest speaker sessions have become very famous over time. The 2011 premiers of 'Eros Ink', and 'The Darkening' in Freeport by acclaimed artists. These were one of their kind inaugurals ever held at a music festival. More so, the film festival also held informative sessions on film making, film types and especially film music. The fest presents detailed talks by directors and musicians who make music for genres like comedy, drama, art films and music. The festival ends with a competition where they winner take back awards, cash and other prizes back home.
