Playing various music genres, including bluegrass, honky-tonk, roots rock, alternative-country, old-time and folk, Old Crow Medicine Show is a Nashville, Tennessee based band. Known as the mountain music revivalists, the band spins together the traditional folk and blues in rock ‘n’ roll style.
The band consists of Critter Fuqua, Kevin Hayes, Morgan Jahnig, Ketch Secor and Willie Watson. Most of the members are proficient in playing more than one instrument. Among these include the banjo, resonator guitar, harmonica and guitjo and many others. The members of the quintet belong to different states. They came together in New York sharing the same passion for music and hence formed the band Old Crow Medicine Show.
Old Crow Medicine Show started off by performing on street corners in New York and all the way up to Canada, leaving newly won legions of fans behind. The band’s ability of making a completely new style of music out of traditional genres is a commendable job and thus they are regarded as one of the most innovative musicians in the industry today.
In 1998, while performing in front of a pharmacy in North Carolina, Old Crow Medicine Show caught the attention of the folk icon Doc Watson. He invited the band to perform at the MerleFest. This was the beginning point for the professional career of the band. The group shifted to Nashville shortly afterwards, where they entertained crowds at Grand Ole Opry, between the shows. During this time the band also toured with Marty Stuart and Merle Haggard, appeared on NPR’s Prairie Home Competition, and also opened for Dolly Parton and the Del McCoury Band.
In 2003, Old Crow Medicine Show signed to Network America, and started writing compositions themselves. Their self-titled debut album, "O.C.M.S" arrived the following year. It was recorded in RCA’s legendary studio B and also in Woodland’s Sound Studios. The album contained a mixture of traditional tunes as well as some original compositions written by the band itself. It also had the acoustic quintet’s signature tune Wagon Wheel, which is based on Secor’s life and is co-authored by Bob Dylan. It also includes a fragment of one of Dylan’s songs for the chorus. This first of the four studio albums released by the band topped the U.S Billboard Top Bluegrass Albums chart and also made it to the list of U.S. Billboard Top Country Albums. The other three albums by Old Crow Medicine Show are "Big Iron World" (2006), "Tennessee Pusher" (2008) and "Carry Me Back" (2012).
In 2011, Old Crow Medicine Show went on the notable Railroad Revival Tour along with Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and Mumford and Sons. Riding the vintage train from California to New Orleans and performing on the way, these bands were captured by the camera for the documentary Big Easy Express. In 2013 Old Crow Medicine Show along with the other two bands won the Grammy Award for "Best Long Form Music Video" for the documentary.
From its inception till today, the Old Crow Medicine Show has sold about a million albums, and has also become regular guest on A Prairie Home Companion. The band has also performed at popular festivals like Coachella, Bonnaroo and Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival. In May of 2013, the acoustic group’s "Wagon Wheel" received the RIAA’s Platinum certification for selling over a million copies.
Old Crow Medicine Show is known for the exuberant energy that the members put in their work and performances, particularly the live shows. Lively stars on stage, playing foot thumping, head banging beats with audience gathered around the stage dancing, clapping and cheering along them is typical of their concerts.
