From Wonder Wonder to Oh Wonder
The duo initially started out as Wonder Wonder. They performed some gigs and started gaining recognition based on this name. However, there was another band going around with the same name, the discovery of which compelled Josephine Gucht and Anthony West to come up with a different name. Quirky as ever, the duo wished to stick to ‘wonder’ because it is their favorite word. As a result, after an hour’s worth of brainstorming, the duo conjured up “Oh Wonder” and since then, the name and band have been here to stay.
Pondering over Oh Wonder
For Oh Wonder band members, Josephine Vander Gucht and Anthony West, becoming a world-famous band and touring the world was a happy accident. They had started out as collaborative songwriters, with the aim of presenting their songs to other artists. In order to get themselves recognized, the two began uploading demos of their songs to SoundCloud. Pretty soon, their work began getting massive views online, well into thousands.
A Song a Month
Seizing this opportunity of recognition, the two-piece started a yearlong online campaign in which they released a single song each month. This became a hit with their online audience, with each release averaging 100,000 listens at least.
Before they knew it, the two were signed by a music label and working on an album of their own, self-titled as Oh Wonder. Touring for this album took them to Hong Kong, Norway and New York amongst many other diverse destinations and the duo first realized how real their fame was. Although wary of being famous, Josephine and Anthony often express their gratitude how this platform has allowed them to learn individual’s experiences. "Rather than just, 'Oh, I really like that song you did,' we get, 'You released that song when I was at university or I had moved to a different country'. We get the most heart-warming stories. Hundreds a week." –Josephine Gucht, BBC Radio One
The band’s first album, released over the period of a year on SoundCloud, is self-titled. This album becomes crucial to their journey because it is what has essentially launched them to the world. Particularly highlighted in this album is the duo’s signature vocalizing. Gucht’s voice serves as the main vocal while West’s vocals are double-timed, once in the left-ear and once in the right-ear. The effect created by this is that of a consistent harmony till the end of the track. After a while, the listener becomes unaware that these are two separate voices, as the two-piece’s undeniable chemistry shines through.
The band’s latest album, Ultralife, is an even more confident release than their first work. It depicts a group who are sure of themselves and willing to project that sureness to the rest of the world. Their head-single, titled Ultralife as well invites the listener to embrace their freedom.
This album also displays their seemingly effortless song-writing. The duo tends to create unique expressions, with self-coined words to describe them. Oh Wonder’s alt-pop radio-ready hooks are delivered with minimal extravagance, keeping the tracks clean, plain and simple. Gucht and West describe themselves as primarily as song-writers and assert that their music is all about the lyrics. Therefore, their songs are emotive, well-expressed creative pieces that depict meaning as well as soul, appealing to the listener’s intellect rather than just feeding them senseless groovy beats.
Ultralife Tour 2017
Oh Wonder has mentioned on numerous occasions that touring rejuvenates their song-writing spirits, after the completion of an album. As a result, the two-piece band is touring its new album across the globe. The US is set to welcome the band this fall. Therefore, if you would like to catch one of their gigs to experience some refreshing music, Oh Wonder tickets are on sale now.
