Of Monsters and Men tickets offer a great opportunity to visit the live side of one of the most fresh music acts from Iceland. Of Monsters and Men is an indie folk/indie pop outfit that has brought a new side of the genre to mainstream music. The band's musical style sounds like many famous indie acts such as the Arcade Fire, Mumford & Sons, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros.
The band was formed in the year 2009 when six of its seven band members came together to play their kind of music. Of Monsters and Men are Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir and Ragnar RaggiÞórhallsson on vocals/guitar, Brynjar Leifsson on lead guitars, Arnar Rósenkranz Hilmarsson on the drums, Árni Guðjónsson on the piano/accordion, Kristján Páll Kristjánsson on the bass and Ragnhildur Gunnarsdóttir on the trumpets.
The band was basically an extension of Hilmarsdóttir's solo act called the Songbird. She was joined by Raggi on vocals/guitar/melodic/glockenspiel, Brynjar on the guitar/ melodic and Arnar on drums/percussion/melodic/glockenspiel and backing vocals to complete a band lineup. The next year the band swept Músiktilraunir when they participated in the Battle of the Bands contest. They outshined as the winners and became a sensational new sound in Iceland. A little later, Árni and Kristján joined in to add the real folk dimension to their music. With their accordion, piano and bass, the members took the band's music a level up.
The band became a high demand act on radio, television and concerts. It continued touring across Iceland alongside new music and songs. Their folk pop and indie music were fairly successful in Iceland. However, the distinct sound of their music and their haunting vocals became an enigma for international music. It all started at the Iceland Airwaves festival 2010; here the band was invited for a first time performance. This occasion opened the doorway to international music of the band. It was here that the KEXP, a Seattle based radio station, was visiting and upon hearing about their popularity recorded their music. The station took back a live session of the song “Little Talks” and later aired it. From the West coast to the Philadelphia's Radio 104.5 took “Little Talks” and played it. This airplay made the band a nationwide hit. The mainstream music and public in general found their music mysterious yet enjoyable. They simply loved it!
Of Monsters and Men kept up their hard work by recording songs and touring live. They also signed their first record deal with Record Records. In the process, they also released their debut EP Into the Woods. The EP was an introduction to the band's first studio album. My Head Is an Animal came out in 2011; it was an instant hit when it took the US Billboard 200 album charts by storm. It climbed all the way up to No. 6 position on the European charts. Many other charts were also smashed by the commercial success of “Little Talks”. This song was not just a chart topper in the US but it became a monster hit in five other countries. In the US, the band became one of the best loved alternative bands.
From Iceland to the United States and Europe, the band got great appreciation and success. My Head Is an Animal was later released in United States in 2012. The album had all the right elements for success. No wonder it became a hit worldwide, earning the band's first ever European Border Breakers Award. With this the band became the best new act in European music that was followed madly by the youth.
Since the band started getting critical and general acclaim, it also started touring more often. It mostly performed on tours of festivals or awards. A few sold out live performances of the band were showcased at the Osheaga Festival Montreal (2012) and Lollapalooza, Chicago (2012). The band had also performed at venues across Europe and got huge response in Ireland, Italy, Germany and Sweden. One of the biggest hits of the band has come through a show titled Sound Tracks: Music Without Borders on PBS. The song “Mountain Sound” was performed here beautifully.
