Today, Stefani is the leading face of No Doubt along with Tom Dumont, Tony Kanal and Adrian Young. However, back to the Anaheim of 1986 where the band was formed, its lineup consists of John Spence as lead vocalist, Stefani, her brother Eric and Tony Kanal. With ample musical experience in the past, these four started off as No Doubt by playing gigs at parties and small clubs. It was the second year of No Doubt's formation that Spence committed suicide and Gwen Stefani stepped in as lead vocalist. For almost five years, the band kept establishing regional attention through live gigs while several replacements had also been made in the original lineup.
No Doubt's self-titled debut, released in 1991, sank without a trace compelling the label, Interscope Records to back out from their support. This was followed by Eric Stefani's departure from the band and the end of the seven years old relationship between Kanal and Gwen. While nothing seemed to hit the bull's eye, their self-released album Beacon Street Collection sold fairly well and the band re-gained the Interscope's attention.
It was a single Just A Girl from their next album, Tragic Kingdom that did the trick for No Doubt. Documenting the Kanal-Gwen breakup, the album also churned out other top ten hits such as Spiderwebs and Don't Speak. The band got great reviews from the critics and their unique mix of ska, pop, new wave, punk and rock received positive response from the listeners.Besides the music, No Doubt also hogged the limelight because of Gwen Stefani's pop star status and her teenybopper style. She successfully maintained a solo career besides recording and touring with the band. Other members also ventured in side-projects, but they kept teaming up for albums and records in order to satisfy the No Doubt fans.
The follow up to Tragic Kingdom was appropriately titled Return of Saturn as this was band's studio release after good five years. Hit singles like Ex-Girlfriend and Simple Kind of Life became the youth ballads and further raised the No Doubt craze.Rock Steady came in December 2001 containing the rocking track Hey Baby. The single earned them a Grammy for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group in 2003 while another single, Underneath It All, got the same honor in 2004. The band has also won many MTV Video Music Awards because of their unique and cutting-edge music videos.
One factor of No Doubt' super success is their Live presence that cast a musical spell on the concertgoers. Besides United States, the band has performed several concerts in Europe, New Zealand, Australia, Indonesia, Singapore and Japan, and the response was over-whelming everywhere.
Now, the members of No Doubt are all-set for their first American tour in half a decade. The tour is expected to create gates-shattering response as the No Doubt fans are early anticipating the reunion of Young, Dumont, Kanal and Stefani Live on stage. If you are one of their hard-core fans, you simply can't afford to miss the magic of No Doubt. Can you?
