Nickel Creek consists of three members, Chris Thile, Sean Watkins and Sara Watkins. With Chris Thile on the mandolin, Sean Watkins on the guitar and Sara Watkins on the fiddle, Nickel Creek had all the things going to make wonderful music together. The trio focuses on progressive bluegrass and their music is epitomized by its acoustic sound.
The trio first met in 1989 when they attended the same bluegrass show with their parents. Brother and sister, Sean and Sara Watkins, along with Chris Thile started taking music lessons together and decided to form a band. Their first performance was a gig at That Pizza Place where Scott Thile, Chris Thile’s father, played bass for them. Interestingly, Sean Watkins, the eldest of the two siblings, was only twelve at that time. The band started off by playing small gigs and performing at bluegrass festivals. Upon getting recognition for their performances, they decided to record their music and release an album. The band’s first album, Little Cowpoke was released in 1993 and was followed by a second album, Here to There, in 1997.
The band’s next effort was the eponymous 2000 album, “Nickel Creek”. It was produced by Alison Krauss and went on to be a critical and commercial hit for the band. It peaked at number thirteen on the country chart and reached number two on the US Indie chart. The same year the band was nominated for two Grammy Awards, Best Bluegrass Album and Best Country Instrumental Song. The album went on to be certified Platinum in the United States.
Following the success of their third album, the band started work on their next venture. The Side was released in 2002 and was even a bigger success than their previous album. It reached the number two spot on the county charts and peaked at number one on the Indie charts and the Bluegrass charts. The album won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album and went on to be certified gold at the year’s end.
The trio released one more album before deciding to take a hiatus from Nickel Creek. Why Should the Fire Die? was released in 2005 and had more rock and pop undertones than their previous work. It reached the number one spot on the Bluegrass and Indie charts and peaked at number seventeen on the Billboard 200 Chart.
Following a long hiatus from Nickel Creek, the individual members went on to pursue successful solo careers. However, the trio has decided to reform and the band is back once again. Nickel Creek has announced the release of their latest album, A Dotted Line, for April 2014 and have announced tour dates as well.
