Ghosteen – The Album

Ghosteen is the title of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds’ seventeenth studio album. Released in October 2019, it marks the final part of a trilogy of albums which includes Push the Sky Away and Skeleton Tree, released in 2013 and 2016 respectively.

Musician Nick Cave lost his teenage son in a car accident in 2015. Many thought that he would stop working for some time and disappear to mourn the loss. However the very next year he dropped the album Skeleton Tree, a project he had mostly worked on before his son Arthur Cave passed away. Next he started an online ask-me-anything- forum titled The Red Hand Files in which he openly discussed his state of mind and gave advices to others. He also embarked on a solo tour where he mixed his songs with questions from the live audience.

Ghosteen is a double album and its title is a combination of the ‘ghost’ and the Irish word ‘een’ which translates in English as small, little or benevolent. Cave took this name from a book regarding Irish tinkers in which the author believes his child has been possessed by a ghost.

Like the album Skeleton Tree, Ghosteen features extensive use of sparse piano, drones, analogue synthesizers and choral harmonies. One of the most prominent features on the sound of the collection is orchestral strings.

Cave Began writing for Ghosteen back in early 2017. Traditionally, he used to write lyrics in a private office but this time around he chose to write them at his home in Brighton. Just like his previous album, in this album too he shifted from his narrative based approach as he believed it to be ‘restrictive.’

A number of well-known publications described the lyrics of the album as dealing with themes of loss and grief. At the same time, critics also observed some positive themes such as optimism and empathy.

Besides critical acclaim, Ghosteen has met an overwhelmingly positive response commercially as well. It has ranked on the Top 10 of music charts in various countries including Australia, Italy, Germany, Sweden and the UK.
