The Artists at the 33rd Salsa Festival
Various big names in the music industry will be making their way to Brooklyn to perform during this festival. Let’s take a look at what is in store for you.
Willie Colon: Willie Colon was born in 1950 in New York City. He is a Nuyorican salsa musician who began his career as a trombonist. In addition to these, William Anthony also sings songs, produces, writes and acts. Combining the elements of rock, jazz and salsa, Willie Colon has managed to create raw and authentic music. His work incorporates traditional elements of music from Cuba, Brazil and Puerto Rico.
Eddie Palmieri: Born in 1936 in New York City, Eddie Palmieri is a true legend that you don’t want to miss live in concert. He is a Grammy Award winning artist whose prowess as a pianist, composer, musician and band leader has made him a common name in the industry. He is the man behind the founding of La Perfecta II, La Perfecta and Harlem River Drive.
Tito Nieves: Tito Nieves was born in 1958 and is considered among the leading salsa singers of the 19802 and early 1990s. He is also referred to as “El Pavarotti de la Salsa”. Tito Nieves began his career at a very young age by participating in Orquesta Cimarron, which was a New York based group. In 1977, he teamed up with Hector Lavoe and joined Cojunto Clasico. Soon he decided to go solo. He distinguished himself by singing salsa in English. His most famous hits include Sonámbulo, El Amor Más Bonito and the English salsa song, I Like It Like That.
Grupo Niche: This salsa group was founded in 1978 in Columbia. It is a particularly popular group in Latin America. Grupo Niche was created by Jairo Varela along with Alexis Lozano. Other members include Moncho Santana, Alvaro del Castillo, Charlie Cardona, Tito Gomez and Charlie Zaa. Grupo Niche is known for its ability to vary its music from vigorous and up tempo to slow-paced romantic ballads.
Tito Rojas is a 61-year old salsa singer and bandleader from Puerto Rico. He got into music at a young age, when he started singing for his family and friends on various small occasions. In 1975, he joined Pedro Conga and his International Orchestra as a singer, after giving an audition. In 1978, he joined the Fania All-Stars, soon after which he decided to form his own band called the “Conjunto Borincano”. This venture was short-lived. In 1995, after going solo, Rojas recorded Por Propio Derecho, which placed him on the Latin Billboards hit list. Soon he won a double Platinum Record Award and the Paoli Prize for the “Best Salsa Artist of the Year” and an “ACE” Award.
Eddie Santiago: Born in Toa Alta, Puerto Rico, Eddie Santiago is a 61 year old salsa singer, who has been making wonderful salsa tunes since 1984. He started performing with different groups at a young age and demonstrated a great amount of love for salsa music. His career officially took off in 1984 as a solo artist, with songs such as "Tú me quemas", "Qué Locura Enamorarme de Ti", "Me Fallaste" and "Tu Me Haces Falta".
Frankie Negron: Born in New Jersey and of Puerto Rican descent, Frankie Negron is a talented salsa singer. He is classified among the young tropical singers who have managed to create a unique blend of pop, gospel, R&B, hip-hop and rock music with a strong influence of salsa music.
All these artists along with others such as Fruko Y Sus Tesos, DLG, Jerry Rivera and Domingo Quinones will be coming to New York for a wonderful salsa night.
