The Orchestra was formed in the year 1983 by Skitch Henderson, former NBC music director. The aim was to promote and celebrate the rich musical heritage of the country. For this purpose a group of over seventy experienced musicians were selected to hold music concerts in both formal and informal styles and settings. In addition to this, high quality educational programs were designed in order to enlighten and teach the public about the history and skills of the art form.
The Great American evolving songbook performed by the orchestra consists of all forms of popular songs from film and theatre music to rock, jazz and other famous numbers by independent musical bands and artists. These include pieces by well known names such as Irving Berlin, Harold Arlen, Leonard Bernstein, Duke Ellington, Aaron Copland, George Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Ron Roullier, Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers and Stephen Sondheim.
The New York Pops holds a series of free concerts in various parks around New York City. This gives a chance to all kinds of people to take part in these musical experiences. Apart from performing at the Carnegie Hall and city parks, the orchestra holds touring shows which showcase the country’s musical talent. In the past, they have held the New Year’s special concerts in Tokyo and Osaka, Japan.
Dedicated to its cause of lifelong musical training and guidance, the nonprofit organization collaborates with several schools and youth organizations throughout the five districts of the city. It conducts music lessons to groom the creative potential of the younger generation. Apart from these lessons and workshops, the New York Pops also provides its concert and rehearsals’ passes for children so that they get a chance to observe the amount of effort that goes into the making of a show and its impact.
The yearly birthday Gala allows young children the special privilege to view the affair from the famous balcony of the prestigious Carnegie Hall. A professional music composer of the orchestra is given residential facility at a selected public school in order for him to devote and focus all his time and energy to the cause of grooming young music talent. Here he works with the children teaching them the purpose and skills of various instruments. At the end of this program, children hold a concert featuring their own musical compositions.
Every Saturday the New York Pops instructors hold after school music lessons for students who wish to learn and participate in music based activities. This feature of the educational program is called ‘Salute to music’. By the end of the year, the organization selects the best students to perform with the orchestra on the stage at Carnegie Hall.
Another popular educational feature is that of ‘Rhythm, Rhyme and Rap’. This program focuses on boosting the self-esteem and creativity of young students. The students are given opportunities to explore and discover their own instruments and create their own rhythms. The program brings out the hidden individualistic abilities and talent of young minds by guiding them in the right direction.
The New York Pops also work closely with the band and orchestra of some of the public schools in the city. Here they work together with the school management. In education, the New York Pops has also launched the New York Pops Education Programs which cater to thousands of children each year. These programs were first introduced in 1990 and since then, they have brought the magic of music to more than eighteen thousand children in the US. It is a spectacular feat, made even more so by the budgetary crisis and cutting back of funds for art education. Through this way, this orchestra promotes awareness in young people of music and helps build the future American musicians. In collaboration with the New York City Public Schools, it also organizes free music lessons, free concerts, free admissions to rehearsals and free classroom programs that help build creative potential in children. Indeed, each season, over a thousand children receive free tickets to watch its concerts held at Carnegie Hall in the balcony. Through its Create A Symphony program, a New York City public school is selected where a professional composer takes up residence and then teaches students how to create original music. This happens each week for a thirteen week period and usually ends with a concert in which the students’ compositions are featured.
