The Orchestra was formed in the year 1983 by Skitch Henderson, former NBC music director. The aim was to promote and celebrate the rich musical heritage of the country. For this purpose a group of over seventy experienced musicians were selected to hold music concerts in both formal and informal styles and settings. In addition to this, high quality educational programs were designed in order to enlighten and teach the public about the history and skills of the art form.
The Great American evolving songbook performed by the orchestra consists of all forms of popular songs from film and theatre music to rock, jazz and other famous numbers by independent musical bands and artists. These include pieces by well known names such as Irving Berlin, Harold Arlen, Leonard Bernstein, Duke Ellington, Aaron Copland, George Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Ron Roullier, Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers and Stephen Sondheim.
The New York Pops holds a series of free concerts in various parks around New York City. This gives a chance to all kinds of people to take part in these musical experiences. Apart from performing at the Carnegie Hall and city parks, the orchestra holds touring shows which showcase the country’s musical talent.
