The New York Philharmonic was founded by Ureli Corelli Hill and is regarded as one of the Big Five American orchestras, a group of the five greatest orchestras in the US. Its current home is the Avery Fisher Hall which is part of one of America’s most famous destinations for the performing arts, the Lincoln Center. It is the oldest symphony orchestra in America, older by forty years than the second oldest orchestra. In 2004, it organized its fourteen thousandth orchestra.
The New York Philharmonic was founded by Ureli Corelli Hill, an American conductor in 1842 as the Philharmonic Society of New York. It became the third philharmonic to be located in America and was founded with the sole aim of advancing instrumental music. The very first concert was performed at the Apollo Rooms, located on lower Broadway in front of an audience six hundred large. This concert saw Ureli Corelli Hill conduct Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 as the opening act in a three hour long program that featured French conductor Denis Etienne and German conductor Henry Christian Timm.
The New York Philharmonic ran as a cooperative society in which the musicians voted on all issues such as who would conduct, who could join and what music to play. At the end of each season, the income earned from the orchestra’s activities would then be divided amongst the musicians. In only four years, they began work on a new venue, raising funds for it as well through a special concert. This concert featured Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8 as the opening act and was organized at the Castle Garden. A phenomenal concert then, it featured around four hundred vocalists and instrumentalists performing the premiere of one of Beethoven’s greatest pieces of classical music under conductor George Loder.
Premiering Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in America, this orchestra wrote a new page in history, defining the piece of music to play when a grand gesture was required. New conductors such as Theodore Eisfeld and Carl Bergmann joined the orchestra. They also established a fierce rivalry with the Symphony Society of New York, led by one of its former conductors. In 1891, the Carnegie Hall was built, financed by Andrew Carnegie, and it became the new home to the orchestra. The first concert at this venue was conducted by the legendary Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, an event that marked the start of a new chapter in classical music.
As one of the finest orchestras today, with around twenty Grammy Awards to its name, its concerts are always in high demand, as seen by the rapid demand of New York Philharmonic tickets.
