Hitting the shelves in August 2017, it reached top five on the Billboard 200, and peaked at number two on the Billboard Top Rock Albums. The commercially and critically successful album comes with a supporting tour that starts on January 19, 2018 from Tucson. Neck Deep tickets have been announced for the rest of the trek as well – the schedule includes a final stop in LA’s Henry Fonda Theatre.
Neck Deep – The Pop Punk Revival
Hailed as the pop punk mavericks, Neck Deep was initially formed by Ben Barlow and Lloyd Roberts, but the latter left following the release of their debut album.
Contrary to their name, Neck Deep first tested water before taking a full plunge into the music scene. The single “What Did You Expect” was released online and after it received favorable reviews, drummer Dani Washington, guitarist Matt West and bassist Fil Thorpe-Evans were roped in. Along with Roberts as the lead guitarist and Barlow on vocals, the band came up with their debut EP “Rain in July”.
Produced by the label We Are Triumphant, it hit the shelves in 2012 and Neck Deep was lauded for their incredible pop punk hooks. Packed with energy, passion and loads of talent, the good response encouraged them to take their music on a road spin. They performed live in UK on three dates and Neck Deep’s popularity gained momentum.
Polishing their sound, the band’s second EP “A History of Bad Decisions” presented a more refined and mature collection. Critics praised it in words, “catchy songs with heart and soul”.
By the time Neck Deep’s debut studio album came out, they had enough fan following to make it a hit.
Hard-hitting Debut Album
It ended up not being a Wishful Thinking – yes, pun intended. The album brought them acclaim, respect and an international recognition. It peaked at number three on the Billboard Heatseekers Album and was mostly driven by catchy chorus. The first track on the album “Losing Teeth” set the momentum with its smooth vocals and upbeat tempo. The superb guitaring and drumming on “Damsel in Distress” impressed the critics as Neck Deep presented an eclectic sound.
“Sweet Nothings” put a stamp on their talent as blasting, rolling drums built a strong chorus. Dynamic harmonies and powerful vocals all contributed to “Wishful Thinking” success.
Rising as Pop Punk Powerhouse
Whatever Neck Deep lacked in their debut album, they made up for it in their second release “Life’s Not out to Get You”. It not just broke through the Billboard 200 charts, but also topped the Billboard Independent Albums.
Finding popularity as one of the most quintessential pop punk bands from UK, Neck Deep thrived on their incredible sound. Hard-hitting drumming, slashing guitar riffs and thunderous hooks presented a more exuberant style. Driven by endless energy, the songs “Gold Steps” and “Kali Ma” set the momentum early on. “Smooth Seas Don’t Make Good Sailors” is a pop punk banger that the fans enjoy the most during their live concerts.
Neck Deep’s potential flourished with time and they convincingly rose to the status of one of the finest pop punk bands.
