Born in 1958 at the heart of country music in Texas, Neal had developed an interest in music from a young age. He used to listen to all kinds of R&B, disco, pop and country music which were the preferred musical choices of his parents. He first started singing in churches and local gospel choirs and after performing in schools, quartets and musicals, his voice had developed into a rich baritone so at this point he decided that it was time to establish his own R&B band. However, it didn’t take long for Neal to realize that Country was the genre that was best suited to him and he started a string of performances in small clubs and bars all across the state of Texas.
In 1981, a struggling McCoy managed to win a talent competition which was hosted by 80s’ country legend, Janie Fricke. This victory secured him the spot of an opening act for the Grand Ole inductee, Charlie Pride. Neal’s friendship with Charlie proved to be quite fruitful for the former artist as he was now opening concerts in front of huge audiences. He continued to tour with Pride for six years and they parted ways in 1990.
The big break for McCoy came in 1990, when Atlantic Records signed him and his debut album, "At This Moment" was released in the same year. The opening number of this record "If I Built You a Fire" made it to the Hot Country Songs chart and also ranked in the top 20 in Canadian charts. After the release of his first album, the singer embarked on countrywide tours which developed his show’s reputation as some of the most "freewheeling and exciting live shows of the town". The second record by McCoy, "Where Forever Begins" was his first to have made it to the Hot Country Albums chart.
Neal’s fortunes again took a turn for the better when he met up with producer Barry Beckett and released his first Platinum-certified album, "No Doubt About It". After this release he instantly became a breakthrough star with his chart-busting title track "Wink" spending a whole month at number one position in Hot Country Songs chart. Neal continued to experience commercial success throughout the late 1990’s with two of his albums being certified as platinum and one as gold. He became the recipient of Music City News Country Award for the category of "Entertainer of the Year" in 1998 and 1999. During this time he also managed to produce six more top ten hits including songs like "The City Put the County Back in Me", "Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye" and "For a Change".
In 2005 the talented artist formed his own label named, 903 Music and released the single "Billy’s Got his Beer Goggles On" for his own label. Later on this song became the lead off his album "That’s Life" and made it to the Billboard Hot 100. The album itself managed to clinch the 8th position in the Country charts. McCoy’s latest work includes his 2011 album "XII" which remained immensely successful in the US.
