Natalie Anne Merchant, known professionally as Natalie Merchant, is an American singer. She is best known for being part of the music group, ‘10,000 Maniacs’ before quitting the band in favor of a solo career. Apart from her career in popular music, Merchant has also composed the music for a number of films and television shows. For her 2012 concert, fans are jumping at the chance of getting Natalie Merchant tickets for the long awaited tour.

Natalie Merchant was born and raised in Jamestown, New York. She comes from a musical family. Her grandfather played a number of instruments such as the guitar, the accordion and the mandolin. Her grandmother worked as a piano tuner, and thus had a good knowledge of music, too. Her father was a jazz musician. Merchant’s earliest experiences with music came from mother who introduced her to The Beatles, Aretha Franklin and Al Green. Together, they would also listen to the music from West Side Story and other musicals, and indulge in classical music. This is what prompted her mother into pushing her into formally study music.

A turning point in the life of Natalie Merchant came when she attended a Styx concert at 12 years of age. For one of the songs, the band had a white piano appear on stage, an act that inspired Merchant the most and in many ways shaped her style of performance. Merchant was not allowed to watch television till after she was 12 years old. In fact, her family owned no television at all. For this reason, she did not keep up with popular music. In fact, she only learnt of Bob Dylan when she was 18. She had lived a sheltered life thus far, so once she began her career in music, she had to learn many things about music and the mainstream through osmosis.

Before she was famous enough to be selling out Natalie Merchant tickets, she worked at a health store. She struggled through her years as a teenager, never completing high school and battling though traumatic, suicidal thoughts. But everything was to change for her in 1981 when she joined that band Still Life which would eventually become what we now know as 10,000 Maniacs. With them, she emerged as a talented singer and songwriter. In 1993, she announced her departure from the band and went on to start a solo career.

Natalie Merchant has mentioned in many interviews that she wrote her song, “I May Know the Word” the very same day that she left 10,000 Maniacs. The song was meant to be part of the soundtrack of the movie “Philadelphia”, but did not make the cut. Instead, it appeared on her first ever solo album, “Tigerlily” in 2005. Another song from the album, “Beloved Wife” would end up on the big screen instead for the movie, “Message in a Bottle”.

Her first ever solo album was very well received. It performed well on the charts, sold over 5 million copies, and received rave reviews from critics. “Carnival” became her first top 10 hit, but it was only the first in a long line. Soon after, “Jealously” and “Wonder”, too charted to success. This album remains, to this date, her most successful and recognizable album.

In her songs, Merchant often writes about the media’s interest and pestering pursuit of celebrities. One of the most notable examples of this theme is found in her song, “River”. Focusing on the death of the child actor, River Phoenix, Merchant criticizes the media’s negative involvement in the case. She taunts them and expresses bewilderment on how the media covered the tragic story for their benefit.

In 2009, Natalie Merchant signed with a new record label, “Nonesuch Records”. Under them, she released her new album, “Leave Your Sleep” in 2010. The playlist consisted of songs that had accumulated over the course of five years. Merchant describes the album as a conversation, or rather a compilation of conversations that she had with her daughter from the day she was born till she was 6 years old. This album peaked at number one on various Billboard charts, and at number 17 at the Billboard Top 200.

Her latest tour will focus on promoting this album. A combination of her old songs will also be part of the show. Fans are eager to get Natalie Merchant tickets this year, for she is returning to the stage after a long break. With the anticipation and the five year built up, her upcoming tour will be a show to watch.
