Natalie Cole is an American R&B artist from Los Angeles, California known best for her R&B, soul and pop music that has topped the Billboard charts and sold millions in the process. She is a singer, a songwriter and a musician who plays the piano. She is also an actress who has starred in a number of films. She has been active since 1955, when she was just a mere five years old, making her one of the youngest ever artists and a legend in the world of R&B music today. She has been signed onto a number of labels since her debut in the world of music. Her first label was Capitol Records followed by Epic Records and then Modern Records. In the eighties, she was signed onto EMI-Manhattan and in the nineties with Elektra Records. After the new millennium, she was signed onto Verve Records and then DMI Rhino Records. She has been associated with artists such as Nat King Cole, a jazz legend who is also her father. It is therefore no surprise that she performs in sold out shows and Natalie Cole tickets always remain in great demand.
Natalie Cole is a legend in her own right, added to being the daughter of a jazz legend. She rose to fame in the seventies with songs such as This Will Be An Everlasting Love, Our Love and Inseparable. She continued to reign over the eighties and then the nineties with one of her albums selling more than seven million copies. She has also won many awards, including several Grammy Awards. But this Grammy Award winning singer and songwriter has a past that began many years back. Born to parents who were both artists with her mother being Maria Cole of Duke Ellington Orchestra fame, she grew up in Los Angeles and was exposed to some of the greatest singers in the world of jazz, blues and soul music at a young age.
Natalie Cole’s first appearance in the world of music was on her father Nat King Cole’s Christmas album at the age of six. She then began performing music at the age of eleven. She studied at the NorthfieldMount HermonSchool and then went on to study at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, spending a brief period of time at the University of Southern California as well. She graduated from the University of Massachusetts Amherst with a degree in Child Psychology and a minor in German in 1972. She formed a band soon after graduation and began performing at various venues and clubs. Instead of performing jazz like her father, she began performing R&B and rock music. She attracted the attention of Chicago producers Marvin Yancy and Chuck Jackson who approached her to work on an album.
Natalie Cole’s first album led to her being signed onto Capitol Records which she released as Inseparable. The album was an instant success with her music compared to that of Aretha Franklin with several of the album’s songs having also been turned over to Aretha Franklin herself to sing. The song This Will Be from the album ranked in the top ten of the charts and went on to earn her a Grammy Award for the Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and a Grammy Award for the Best New Artist. The title track of the album ranked first on the Billboard R&B Charts and her next album, Natalie was released in 1976. This was followed by the album Unpredictable whose songs ranked number one of the Billboard R&B charts and the album itself was certified platinum by the RIAA after selling over a million copies. In 1977, she released the album Thankful which was also certified platinum by the RIAA.
With many more platinum and gold certified albums released by Natalie Cole, including an album that sold more than seven million copies, she is today regarded as one of the greatest singers ever in the R&B and soul music genre. She has won many award including nine Grammy Awards out of a mind blowing twenty one Grammy Award nominations. With a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, she is definitely an artist to be seen and heard live by grabbing Natalie Cole tickets for a magnificent night of music .
