The music of this symphony has always been created by the leading composers of America. Giancarlo Guerrero took over as the seventh music director of the symphony in the beginning of its 2009 season. Under the musical direction of Giancarlo Guerrero, the symphony puts on a dazzling display of strength and skill in the form of a diverse repertoire of performances including classical, pop, jazz and family programs. Guerrero has over the journey of his career worked with several celebrated composers including John Adams, Osvaldo Golijov, Aaron Jay Kernis, John Corigliano, Jennifer Higdon and Michael Daugherty. His first recording of Daugherty’s Metropolis Symphony and Deux Ex Machina with Nashville Symphony has earned him a Grammy Award for Best Orchestral Performance in 2011. In 2012, the production of Schwantner: Concerto for Percussion & Orchestra has won him another Grammy Award for Best Classical Instrumental Solo.

The orchestra extends the appreciation of arts and culture in the local community by delivering top-notch musical performance and superior education programs. Approximately two hundred and fifty thousand people benefit from the free education and community outreach programs hosted by the Nashville Symphony. The musicians sit with the students of Middle Tennessee every week and offer them hands-on learning experience through classroom presentations and instrument lessons. Since April 2007, the Nashville Symphony has been hosting a Music Education City program that is targeted towards the children and adults residing in the Nashville and Middle Tennessee region. This thorough music education program covers six basic areas of children's concerts, music instruction, family and adult education, education on tour, promotion and professional development. The symphony has also led the One Note, One Neighborhood program that is aimed at promoting the music education in the public schools of Nashville.
