About My Favorite Murder
My Favorite Murder is a hit comedy podcast that deals with true crime stories. Since the show began in the earlier part of 2016, it has been a mega hit and has broken download records. Fans of the show have developed an interactive and enthusiastic “Murderino” fan base and are coming out in large numbers for the sold out shows happening all across the country.
The show came into being after the two leading ladies met at a Halloween party in 2015 and got into a detailed conversation about car accidents and various murders. Soon they realized that they had an interesting and unique idea that could be of value in the entertainment industry. The first episode of My Favorite Murder was released in January 2016, with Feral Audio.
How It Works?
During the podcast, Kilgariff and Hardstark choose one murder story and discuss it. They occasionally share additional stories submitted by fans or friends. The podcast basically involves a continuous dialogue between the hosts, instead of a detailed recounting of the events that were involved in the crime itself. The initial episodes of the show were based on various themes, such as unsolved murders, “weird murders”, or cannibalism. But the idea of themes was soon abandoned.
When talking about the unique nature of the show and what it means to them, both refer to it as a therapy to deal with their own anxieties about murder. Kilgariff and Hardstark both respect the victims and are compassionate for them and attempt to ensure that they deal with the larger issues at hand with each case – issues such as discrimination against women, the mentally ill and sex workers.
The titles for earlier episodes were usually themed puns or pop culture references such as “Thirty Let The Bodies Hit The Four”, which is a reference to the song “Bodies” by Drowning Pool. “SE7EVteen” was also a reference to the cult-classic Se7en. Recent episode titles have changed the format a bit and are now typically references to conversations within the episode.
The podcast is largely improvisational, with most of the discussion being about the crime. However, the hosts also add a personal touch by talking about current events and happenings from their personal lives. Both have repeatedly clarified that the podcast is not a news-type segment; rather it is meant to be informal and comedic in nature.
The length of the full episodes varies from 60-120 minutes and minisodes are typically 30-45 minutes long. The catch phrase of the show is “Stay sexy and don’t get murdered”, used by the hosts to end each episode.
