Anthony Pinnunziato is a gay Italian-American character who is one of the most liberal in his family. His large sized, rather chaotic family makes his life miserable when he reveals his desire of marrying his boyfriend Andrew in a very traditional Italian wedding ceremony. The plot becomes complicated when Anthony's controlling mother refuses to give her blessings while Andrew's mother also refuses to give her share. The situation becomes a fix when Andrew's ex-boyfriend joins in and tries to break up the couple.
My Big Gay Italian Wedding‘s was premiered at NYC’s Actor's Playhouse in 2003. Peter Rapanaro was the director and had highly attractive costume designing by Chris March ( from the famed reality television show Project Runway). This production initially ran in parallel to another repertory at the Playhouse; due to a good response from the public it moved to a bigger venue. Theatre Four showcased this performance with a new cast for another thirty eight weeks.
The play made a comeback in the fall of 2009 in Dina Manzo’s hands. The opening show had Scott Evans and Dr. Joy Browne as guests; this performance was staged at the St. George Theatre, Staten Island. Teresa A. Cicala directed this version and the choreography by was done by J. Austin Eyer. The play had a brilliant and fresh outlook and was praised a lot by the public and critics. In the summer of the following year, the play’s cast was revamped and the show went to be staged at the St. Luke's Theatre. While at St. Luke’s the cast of the show kept on improving with names like Daniel Robinson, David Moretti, Ilene Kristen, Claire Buffie, Tabatha Coffey, Lance Bass and Vincent Pastore appearing as guests on stage.
The play hit audiences with a bang when Real House Wives cast members Ashley Holmes, Lauren Manzo, Teresa Giudice, Jacqueline Laurita and Caroline Manzo came to the stage. Marty Thomas was also a very special addition who came and performd alongside David J. Boyd. Both the stars recorded an brand new version of the song Love Conquers All from the original soundtrack. This was one of the perks brought in lineup of the cast; it simply added more excitement and pizzazz to the play. Many sold-out performances of the show made it at hit Off-Broadway. After the Edinburgh run, the show then went on to be staged at The White Bear, London. In 2012, the play went to Hong Kong, where it was showcased at The Hong Kong Fringe Club.
