The Mountain Jam started off as a one day festival, eventually morphing into a four day festival held in upstate New York. Its host venue is the nationally renowned Hunter Mountain, a world class ski resort. Despite being a relatively younger music festival, it has risen to become one of the best music festivals in the US, surpassing festivals that are decades old. It is the premier festival of the American Northeast. The Rolling Stone magazine has gone so far as to name is one amongst its list of the Top 8 Music Festivals in the US. It is owned and operated by two parties; Radio Woodstock/WDST and Warren Haynes, best known as a member of bands such as Allman Brothers, Gov’t Mule and The Dead.
The Mountain Jam is popular because of the fact that participants can camp onsite in view of the breathtaking Catskill mountains, enjoying the greenery. Participants can also stay in the many inns, hotels, houses and ski chalets available. The Hunter Mountain Ski Resort is itself unique amongst outdoor venues as its boasts of facilities not present in outdoor venues. These include a large and full service bar, a lounge area, indoor restroom facilities, indoor concert stage and restaurants. The mountain itself, shaped as it is, result in a natural amphitheater with excellent sight lines and the main stage located in a bowl with participants watching live music from the slopes of the mountain.
The Mountain Jam is therefore a music festival that takes place in a mountain with participants sitting on the slope, a truly out of this world experience and an experience no other festival can boast of. Originally started to celebrate the Woodstock based WDST FM’s twenty fifth anniversary, it has turned into one of the leading festivals in the nation. WDST FM itself is one of the leading independent radio stations in the US, an award winning FM that has launched many an artist.
The festival kicked off as a one day event, turning into a two day event in 2006 and a three day event in 2007. In 2011, it turned into a four day experience, allowing even more Mountain Jam tickets to be sold for music fans all over America. This year, the lineup of the festival sees Steve Winwood and Gov’t Mule as the headliners. Other bands performing at the event include The Levon Helm Band, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Micahel Franti & Spearhead, The RootsThe Word with Robert Randolph, , Ben Folds Five, John Medeski & North Mississippi AllStars, Lotus, James Murphy, The Travelin’ McCourys with Keller Williams, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue and Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe. With such an amazing lineup, it is no surprise that this is a music festival ranked as one of the Top 8 in American by Rolling Stone magazine.
