Due to the rise in popularity of rock music, it has been getting more and more difficult to classify the different subgenres it has been divided into over the years. Almost every other artist tries to introduce their own unique sound, or experiment with existing genres, which in turn means that musicians can rarely be classified as just simply rock bands or pop singers any more. They are so much more than that, and that is what the music industry represents today; a diverse hotchpotch of artists trying to make their own unique mark on the world.
Better Open the Door
One band that has been famous for its diverse sound is Motion City Soundtrack. When the group was created, they went through many setbacks and faced quite a lot of problems, but they never compromised on their sound, and finally got their first record deal six years after their formation. They have since gone on to make several successful albums, in which they have not been afraid to experiment and as a result have created something new with every record.
Recently they announced their intentions to go on a hiatus, before which they will go out on tour. If you do not want to miss out on this once in a lifetime opportunity, then here is your chance. Just book your Motion City Soundtrack tickets and enjoy their memorable show, live from the stands.
The group was formed in 1997, and originally consisted of Justin Pierre (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Joshua Cain (lead guitar, backing vocals) Joe Skinner (guitar) and Andrew 'Andy' Whitney (drums). Since then they have been through several changes in lineup, with Pierre and Cain the only mainstays in the group. Today they are joined by Jesse Johnson (Moog synthesizer, keyboard), Matthew Taylor (bass guitar, piano, backing vocals) and Tony Thaxton (drums, percussion, backing vocals).
Where I Belong
It was Pierre and Cain who first got together to form Motion City Soundtrack. Both had joined separate groups after graduating from high school, but soon found the chance to work together and became instant friends. Cain’s older brother gave them the idea for their band’s name and they invited other talented local musicians to join up as well.
The going was tough in the beginning, as they realized that there weren’t too many opportunities available to an up and coming band in Minneapolis. They soon came to the conclusion that if they wanted to find mainstream success, they would have to tour extensively all over the country. Even though this move cost them several band members over the years, they persevered and by 2003 received their first recording contract.
The road to success
The band released its first album, titled “I Am the Movie” later that same year and it made it to number forty two on the US Independent albums charts. It also laid the groundwork for their follow up record, called “Commit This to Memory,, which came out in 2005. It did considerably better than their previous album, making it to number two on the US Independent albums charts and number seventy two on the Billboard charts.
All in they have released six studio albums to date, with their 2010 release “My Dinosaur Life” their best selling album to date. It made it to number fifteen on the Billboard charts as well as number three on both, the US Alternate music and Rock music charts.
So Long Farewell
In 2015, Motion City Soundtrack released their latest album, called “Panic Stations.” It was their first album in three years and made it to number eighteen on the US Alternate music charts. After the release of this record, the band announced their intention to go on a long hiatus, with each member looking to pursue their own solo projects.
However, before they breakup, they announced one last concert tour, named the “So Long, Farewell Tour”. They will travel all over the country in order to play their best songs for their thousands of fans everywhere and if you want to be part of this epic last journey, then here is the chance you have been looking for. Just book your Motion City Soundtrack tickets and enjoy their show, live from the stands.
