The band was created in 1984 in Florida and made its debut in 1987 with New Renaissance Records. Though their first album Abominations of Desolation was recorded in 1986 but the group was not fully satisfied with its production and that is why did not release it till 1991. Their first record Altars of Madness came out in 1989.
The former members of the group are Dallas Ward (vocal), John Ortega (bass guitar), Sterling Von Scarborough (bass guitar), Richard Brunelle (guitar), Kenny Bamber (vocals), and several others. The band's album Altars of Madness was ranked first in the list of 'Top 40 greatest death metal albums' compiled by a United Kingdom music magazine called 'Terrorizer'. The current lineup of the band includes Trey Azagthoth who is a guitarist, synthesizer, plays keyboards, and is also a backing vocalist. Pete Sandoval serves as percussionist and drummer in the group, whereas David Vincent provides his services as the lead vocalist and bass guitarist. Destructhor plays the guitar, and Tim Yeung works on the session drums.
Trey Azagthoth was rated no. 1 'death metal guitarist ever' by the Decibel Magazine. The songs produced by the band are complex in their arrangement, due to the extensive technical skills of Pete Sandov, the drummer, and Azagthoth. Morbid Angel is considered as the 3rd best selling music group in death metal genre around the country after Deicide and Cannibal Corpse being first and second. Morbid Angel's third album Covenant is the best-selling record with more than 15,000 copies sold.
Throughout history, just a handful of musicians have been capable of achieving an iconic status within the given form of art and Morbid Angel is one of them. Crushing the borders of imagination and creativity while budding with every new release all through its career, Morbid Angel stands all by itself as a true icon. The ensemble focuses on terms such as anti-Christian, occultism, and Satanism in their lyrics. The band appeared on a few of the European Festivals in 2008 and their appearance was declared as a 'short break from writing and pre-production of their new 8th studio album'. In 2008, it was publicized that Zyklon's Thor Anders Myhren would become a new touring member. He also served as the guitarist of the band on their latest record. Nevermore from the upcoming album was played by them in the European tours in 2008. Morbid Angel embarked on a tour to the Scion Rock Fest in California in 2011. This was the group's first performance in the States in 6 years, apart from an off-show in LA in 2009. As the band went through some lineup changes, in March 2010 it was announced that the new drummer to play on the forthcoming album would be Tim Yeung while Pete Sandoval pulls through a back surgery.
