Rising to the top
Monsta X was founded on the South Korean singing competition, ‘No Mercy’ which aired on Mnet. In the start of 2015, the group came out with three singles, 0 (Young) on February 4th, Interstellar on February 11th and Hieut on February 26th. These songs attracted fans from around their hometown of Seoul and with the help of their support, the band released the music video of its single Trespass on May 14th. The track made them very popular nationally. It has crossed twelve million views on YouTube. Trespass also featured on their first extended play of the same name which not only sold in excess of thirty seven thousand copies in Korea but also topped the Gaon Music Chart.
They then decided to star in the reality web series, ‘Deokspatch’ and in fall hit the studios to record their sophomore extended play, ‘Rush.’ The EP included six songs on the tracklist including the title track whose music video was uploaded on YouTube on September 6th. Monsta X continued to thrill the world with their up-tempo music and won the hearts of fans when they performed live versions of Trespass and Rush on the red carpet of Mnet Asian Music Awards. The band later won the ‘Next Generation Asian Artist’ award the same night.
Setting the bar high
In March of 2016, Monsta X returned to the stage and performed live at KCON in Abu Dhabi. They later announced plans of releasing new music which got them trending on Twitter in countries like, Indonesia, Korea and Japan. On May 18th, the group’s third extended play, ‘The Clan Part. 1 ‘Lost’ was issued by Starship Entertainment. Monsta X experienced an increase in popularity with the release of this EP as it not only peaked at the first spot on the Hanteo chart but also topped the U.S & Japanese iTunes’s K-Pop charts. ‘The Clan Part. 1 ‘Lost’ contained six songs out of which, Ex Girl featured appearance from the South Korean hit maker, Wheein of the popular group, Mamamoo. The EP also won a Golden Disk Award in the category of, ‘Disk Bonsang’ in 2017.
A few months later, the group came out with its fourth EP, ‘The Clan Part. 2 ‘GUILTY’ which landed at the third spot on the Billboard World Album chart. Moreover, it featured a single, Fighter whose music video has been viewed more than five million time on YouTube. Just like his previous EP, it reached the first spot on U.S and Japan’s iTunes K-Pop world album chart. In the same year, Monsta X received K-Ville Music Award for the ‘Breakout Artist of the Year.’
The Clan Pt. 2.5: The Final Chapter
2017 has been a great year for Monsta X fans. The group came out with its first studio album, ‘The Clan Pt. 2.5: The Final Chapter’ which hit the shelves on March 21st, 2017. The record debuted at the first and second spot on the Billboard World Albums and the Gaon Album chart respectively.
Now, the Seoul Music Award winning band is on a tour. They are currently scheduled to perform at The Warfield in San Francisco on July 21st before they play two shows at Los Angeles’s The Novo on July 23rd and 24th.
