Monica’s obsession with singing began in her adolescent years. She spent much of her early teenage years perfecting her vocals skills and also participated in several singing competitions. In 1991, Monica’s performance of Whitney Houston’s Grammy nominated single, The Greatest Love of All caught the attention of the music producer, Dallas Austin. Blown away by her raw talent, he immediately signed her to his label, Rowdy Records and asked Queen Latifah to manage her.
Dallas Austin along with producers, Tim & Bob then hit the studio with Monica to begin work on her first studio effort. Many esteemed songwriters were also hired and they penned down sixteen tracks for the record. On July 18, 1995, ‘Miss Thang’ hit the markets. The album was certified triple platinum in the United States. It was also approved by the critics and landed at the thirty sixth spot on the Billboard 200. On top of that, the album produced three platinum selling singles, Don't Take It Personal (Just One of Dem Days), Like This and Like That and Before You Walk Out of My Life. All of those tracks debuted atop the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
A couple of years later, Monica teamed up with Diane Warren and wrote, For You I Will which she recorded for the film, ‘Space Jam.’ The song boosted her mainstream popularity and went on to sell over a million copies in the U.S.
The Boy Is Mine
Monica then contacted Brandy and together, the duo worked on the song, The Boy is Mine. This track became the biggest hit of 1998 and spent an impressive thirteen weeks at the top of Billboard 200. It was certified double platinum by the RIAA and was placed in Billboard’s list of the, ‘1,001 Songs You Must Hear Before You Die.’ Plus, the track also got them two Grammy nominations out of which they won one for the ‘Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.’
After two months, Monica’s second studio effort, ‘Boy is Mine’ reached the markets. It cemented her place among the best in the business and made her very famous throughout the globe. The album received 4/5 stars from AllMusic and went on to sell more than three million copies in the United States and Canada. Apart from the title-track, it also featured two more number one songs titled, The First Night and Angel of Mine.
Reaching new heights
In 2000, Monica decided to branch out into acting and made her film debut by starring in the Hollywood flick, ‘Boys and Girls.’ She then appeared in another film, ‘Love Song’ in the same year which featured the famous country singer-songwriter, Christian Kane. After a gap of two years, she resumed her music career and spawned her third studio record, ‘All Eyez on Me.’ It was followed by her first chart-topping studio album, ‘After the Storm.’ The record was certified gold by the RIAA and contained three collaborative songs, Get it Off with Dirtbag, Don’t Gotta Go Home with DMX and Go to Bed Mad with Tyrese.
Monica then went on to drop more albums more including, ‘The Makings of Me’ and ‘Still Standing’ both of which peaked at the first spot on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. The latter got her two Grammy nominations.
