The artist has won acclaimed for her recording of Schoenberg Piano Concerto beside Pierre Boulez and the Cleveland Orchestra. With four additional awards on her portfolio including The Gramophone Award for Best Concerto she has surely become a high achiever in her domain. Hailing from Atami, a Tokyo suburb, Uchidaa shifted to Vienna, Austria during her adolescent. Her parents who were professional diplomats always backed her musical interests. There she joined the Vienna Academy of music. She got a chance to become students with names like Stefan Askenase and Wilhelm Kempff.
In the conducive environment at the academy, she learnt a great deal about interpretations of music especially chamber and orchestral music. No wonder influence of maestros like Mozart, Schubert and Beethoven have influenced every bit of her music. Her studio efforts and live recordings are good examples of music inspired by these great names. The repertoire and renditions of the most famous works of these musicians are the best in her profile. Mitsuko is traditional yet progressive at the same time. During her education in the Vienna Academy music, Mitsuku Uchidi's musical emerged as a non-conventional one. She wanted to learn and experience as per her own perceptions. Yet the academy did not allow that. However, kept going on her own terms and when finally she came to stage in in competitions, judges were able to realize what she had been asking for all along. She received second prizes in the Beethoven Competition (1968) and the Chopin Competition (1970) for her tremendous talent and skill.
After quitting from the competitions circuit, Uchida began working as an interpreter of famous music legends. Her fame fired up with word of mouth in the 70s leading up to her awe inspiring interpretation of Mozart in the 80’s. Her highly acclaimed performances of Mozart sonatas in London and Tokyo as well as the sets of complete sonatas became universal hits. During 1985-1986, Uchida performed as a soloist and conductor in the Mozart concerti with the English Chamber Orchestra.
Having been performed for the world's most celebrated musicians and orchestras, Uchida performed as the 'Artist-in-Residency' with Cleveland Orchestra. She was also featured in 'Mitsuku Uchida: Vienna Revisited' produced by Carnegie Hall. The Concertgebouw's series named ‘Carte Blanche’ with Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Ian Bostridge, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Hagen Quartet also featured her wonderful music. Uchida, also directed a piano performance of Schönberg's Pierrot Lunaire. She worked in collaboration with Simon Rattle on the chamber music concert's series and Beethoven's Piano Concerti cycle. This performance won her the position of Artist-in-Residency with the Berlin Philharmonic orchestra at the Lucerne Festival, Salzburg Mozartwoche and Vienna Konzerthaus.
The artist was also featured in the 2005-06 season of the Cleveland orchestra side by side Dame Felicity Lott. For her outstanding music, she was also honored with the Dame Commander position of the Order of the British Empire in 2009. In 2012, she got a Gold Medal by the Royal Philharmonic Society. Uchida has made many contribution to the development of the Borletti-Buitoni Trust. It is a project that displays her commitment to develop the aspirational or amateur performers.
