Mitch Ryder has been around for quite a long while. Let’s take a look at the illustrious career of this American musician.
The Career of Mitch Ryder
His father was his earliest musical influence, who himself was a musician. Tempest was the band that he himself formed, while still in high school. After this, the singer started making appearances with a band called Billy Lee & The Rivieras. This band gained fame with Bob Crewe. And it was Bob Crewe that renamed this group to Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels. Under this new title, the band recorded many hit songs with “Devil with a Blue Dress On” becoming their highest ranking single. “Sock It to Me-Baby” was also a high-charting single, landing at the number 6 spot.
After the early 1970s, Mitch Ryder’s music saw a bit of a downfall. His partnership with The Detroit Wheels also ended in 1968. The singer had only one hit single from this entire period – a cover of the song “What Now, My Love”. His last successful band was Detroit. The only original member from The Detroit Wheels who became a part of this newly formed band was the drummer John Badanjek. This band released an LP in 1972 that ranked in the US at number 176.
After this, Mitch retreated from the world of music for a while, citing throat troubles as the reason for this. In the hiatus, he moved to Colorado with his wife and started taking a keen interest in the art of painting and literature. In 1983, the singer made his return with Never Kick a Sleeping Dog, which featured a cover of the famous Prince song, “When You Were Mine”. This song was also well received and charted on the Billboard Hot 100.
