It all started when Barry Goldberg and Steve Miller joined hands to form the Goldberg-Miller Blues band in 1965. Shawn Yoder was hired as the bassist, Lance Haas on drums and Craymore Stevens was the rhythm guitarist. The band moved to Chicago and played blues in several clubs. For some time the band was in contract with Epic Records and also made an appearance on the American musical variety series Hullaballoo along with the Supremes and the Four Tops. The show was directed by the great Steve Binder.

With an aim to make his mark in the psychedelic music scene, Miller quit the band and moved to San Francisco. There he came up with the Steve Miller Blue Band. In 1967, the band signed a deal with Capitol Records and after that they shortened their name to the Steve Miller Band. They band consisted of Miller and guitarist James Coke along with drummer Tim Davis and bassist Lonnie Turner. With Chuck Berry the band performed at Fillmore West gig and released the performance as a live album titled ‘Live at Fillmore Auditorium’. The band added Boz Scaggs as the guitarist just before their scheduled performance in June at the Monterey Pop Festival. The band recorded its first album ‘Children of the Future’ in May 1968 while touring England. The album on the whole wasn’t a huge success but some of its tracks like the funky blues ‘Steppin Stone’ and acoustic toned ‘Baby’s Calling Me Home’ received quite a lot of attention. The ballad ‘Key To The Highway’ was appreciated by many blues fans.

The release of the second album titled ‘Sailor’ proved to be quite successful as it reached #24 on the Billboard chart. Some hit singles from the album were ‘Lucky Man’, ‘Livin’ In The USA’, ‘Dime-A-Dance’, ‘Overdrive’ and ‘Romance’.

They expanded their fan base with the release of ‘Brave New World’ in 1969 which ranked at #22 on the Billboard chart. The album contained a track which featured Paul McCartney titled ‘My Dark Hour’ and the hit song ‘Space Cowboy’. Miller released ‘Your Saving Grace’ the same year which ranked at #32 on the Billboard chart. ‘Number 5’ was released in 1970 and it ranked at #23 on the Billboard chart.

‘Rock Love’ was released by Capitol Records in 1971 and featured some live, unreleased performances along with studio jam sessions. ‘Rock Love’ is the only album apart from ‘Recall the Beginning…..A Journey from Eden’ that wasn’t released on CD. Their next album ‘The Joker’ hit the shelves in 1973 and ranked at #2 on the Billboard chart with the title track being the band’s first number one single. The title track sold over one million copies and earned Platinum certification.

Their second number one single ‘Rock’n Me’ was released after three years and was part of the record ‘Fly Like An Eagle’. It made it to #3 position on the Billboard chart. The band released ‘The Steve Miller Band’s Greatest Hits 1974-1978’ in 1978 which was a compilation of their greatest songs. It sold more than 13 million copies worldwide.

The Steve Miller Band still performs in front of jam-packed crowd even after all these years. With only a few lineup changes, the band has remained true to their original style. Rock on with the band by purchasing Miller tickets online. They will show you a great time.
