Mickey Hart is an American artist from Brooklyn, New York, who has been performing live rock music since the sixties as a member of the legendary Grateful Dead and as part of his spectacular solo career. As a rock musician, he has been associated with many other bands including The Dead, The Other Ones and the Rhythm Devils. Known best as the drummer of the Grateful Dead, he performs live regularly all over the world and his concerts can be seen through Mickey Hart tickets. It will be an experience that will bring one of the best musicians in rock in front of your eyes. He was a member of the Grateful Dead for over twenty-five years and is thus one of its most famous members.

Mickey Hart was born to a champion drummer, Leonard Hart, who ran a shop called Hart Music which sold musical instruments such as drums in San Carlos, California. In 1967, he joined the Grateful Dead and went on to perform with the band for four years, leaving in 1971. He then went on to work on his solo album, which was released as Rolling Thunder and returned to the Grateful Dead in 1974. He then stayed with the band until it officially dissolved in 1995. However, he still performs with members of the Grateful Dead as The Dead, which was formed after its dissolution. He was interested in percussion from a young age, while still in grade school, and after graduating from high school, he discovered the music of Babatunde Olatunji, a famous Nigerian drummer. He then went on to learn from Babatunde who also collaborated with the Grateful Dead and Mickey Hart on his solo music projects.

Fond of percussion, Mickey Hart went on to explore various percussion instruments and artists from all over the world and performing with them. He has also been influential in finding musical traditions near extinction, working with the Library of Congress’s American Folklife Center, on whose Board of Trustees he sits, and the Smithsonian Institutions’s Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage. As an ethnomusicologist, he is also a member of the Library of Congress’s National Recorded Sound Preservation Board which is widely known for its historical and cultural recordings. In 1991, he released the album Planet Drum which went on to rank first on the Billboard World Music Chart and stayed on this position for twenty six long weeks. It also led to him winning the Grammy Award for the Best World Music Album.

As an author, Mickey Hart has also written a number of books on the history of drumming and its traditions over time. In 1994, alongwith other members of the Grateful Dead, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and in 2000, he became a member of the Institute for Music and Neurologic Function’s Board of Directors. This is an organization whose purpose is to work on developing therapies that heal through music and he has worked with it to further his investigations on the connection between rhythm and music.

Mickey Hart was a judge at the Independent Music Awards in its third edition. He has worked on creating several music projects, including Mystery Box, with whom he performed alive at the Furthur Festival held in 1996. In 2008, he performed as part of a US tour with his band, the Mickey Hart Band, which consisted of the likes of guitarist Steve Kimock, bassist George Porter Jr, keyboardist Kyle Hollingsworth, talking drummer Sikiru Adepoju, drummer Walfredo Reyes Jr and vocalist Jen Durkin. In 2011, Smithsonia Folkways released an album titled as The Mickey Hart Collection which consisted of music from all over the world in countries such as Nigeria, Sudan, Indonesia, Tibet, Brazil and Latvia. With fourteen albums to his name and an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Grateful Dead, he is an artist to enjoy live through Mickey Hart tickets.
