Lacing up the boots

Mickey Gilley was born in Mississippi to Arthur Fillmore Gilley and Irene Gilley in 1936. He was the cousin of the Legendary Jerry Lee Lewis with whom he shared a very close relationship. They, along with another cousin, Jimmy Swaggart were all interested in music from a young age. The trio used to play the piano when they were children and sang Gospel and boogie-woogie music. Jerry Lee Lewis later started his career in the music industry and became successful which made Mickey Gilley follow his footsteps. He soon teamed up with the producer Huey Meaux and started playing sessions in New Orleans.

In 1960’s the artist moved to Texas and began to make name for himself at a time when he was performing in many bars and clubs. That eventually led him to sign with Paula Records. He put out his record, ‘Down the Line’ which featured a single, Now I Can Live Again that received mild success. Mickey Gilley later opened his first club, ‘Gilley’s Club’ in Texas which later came to be known as the ‘World’s biggest honky tonk.’

Breaking into the mainstream

Mickey Gilley recorded a hit song, Room Full of Roses in 1974 which was written by Tim Spencer of the Son of the Pioneers. The single became so popular that he was signed by Playboy Records who distributed it nationally. It went to the top of the Hot Country Songs chart and reached the fourth spot on the Billboard Country Chart. Following the release of his song, Room Full of Roses, the artist put out an album of the same name and went on to release multiple hit singles throughout the 1970’s. Some of those include, City Lights, Window Up Above, Bring it On Home to Me and Don’t the Girls All Get Prettier at Closing Time. He remained a part of Playboy Records and released a total of seven studio albums before he signed with Epic in 1978.

Going viral

Mickey Gilley started to crossover and introduced pop elements in his sound so that his music could compete with the new breed of country singers. He received more success when he contributed his single, Stand by Me to the film, ‘Urban Cowboy.’  The movie received a lot of success and so did the single as it reached the Top 5 of the Adult Contemporary charts. Mickey Gilley continued to deliver hit music and released number one singles like, That’s All That Matters, True Love Ways, Lonely Nights and Talk to Me.
