In 1981, Michael W. Smith signed with Meadowgreen Music as writer, penning several gospel hits for artists like Amy Grant, Bill Gaither, Kath Troccoli, and Sandi Patty. His songs became so popular that some of them have now found their way in church hymnals. The next year, he started touring with Grant as a keyboardist for the Age to Age tour, eventually becoming her opening act and recording his solo album Michael W. Smith Project that brought him his first Grammy nomination. By 1984, when he was releasing his second album, he was touring as a headlining act. Following the release of I 2 (EYE), he teamed up with Grant yet again on her tour Lead Me On World, after which he recorded first ever Christmas album.
