Michael Tilson Thomas: The birth of a star

Michael Tilson Thomas was born on December 21, 1944 in Los Angeles. He was brought up in a household of creative individuals. His father, Ted Thomas was a producer at the Mercury Theatre Company before he started working in films and television after moving to L.A. His mother, Roberta Thomas used to work for Columbia Pictures as head of research. Tilson Thomas’s paternal grandparents, Boris and Bessie Thomashefsky were both well-known performers in New York City’s Yiddish Theater.

Growing up with a passion for music, Michael Tilson Thomas enrolled himself at the University of Southern California where he learned piano with John Crown. At the same time, he studied conducting and composition under Ingolf Dahl. When he turned nineteen, Tilson Thomas became the Music Director of the Young Musicians Foundation Debut Orchestra and got the chance to work with legends like, Igor Stravinsky and Karlheinz Stockhausen. At the same time, he became the conductor and pianist for Jascha Heifetz and Gregor Piatigorsky.

Rising to the top

Michael Tilson Thomas’s popularity started to soar as a conductor and he won the Koussevitzky Prize in 1969. After that, he became the Assistant Conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and made his conducting debut the same year when he replaced William Steinberg mid-concert. This helped him gain some international recognition. Tilson Thomas remained with the Boston Symphony Orchestra till 1974 and made multiple recordings for Deutsche Grammophon. He then started to serve as the Music Director of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and recorded for Columbia Records from 1971 to 1979. During this time, he was also seen working with New York Philharmonics, conducting a series of Young People’s Concerts.

In 1981, Tilson Thomas was made the Principal Guest Conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. He remained with the orchestra till 1985 before he founded the New World Symphony in Florida in 1987. It is an orchestra academy for gifted musicians and he is currently working as the Artistic Director of this organization. He also led the London Symphony Orchestra as the Principal Conductor from 1988 to 1995.

Working with the San Francisco Symphony

In 1995, Michael Tilson Thomas was appointed as the eleventh Music Director of the San Francisco Symphony. During his time with the orchestra, he began to promote American composers by including their work in his performances and also presented the American Mavericks Festival for this purpose. In October of 2017, the San Francisco Symphony announced that Tilson Thomas will be concluding his run as the Music Director of the orchestra at the conclusion of the 2019-2020 season and will be promoted to the position of the Music Director Laureate.

Over the course of his career, he has made in excess of 120 recordings which include works by, Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig Van Beethoven, Gustav Mahler and Igor Stravinsky. He has also helped YouTube create the YouTube Symphony Orchestra in 2009.

Going on tour

Michael Tilson Thomas is now all ready to perform live shows in cities like, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Seattle, Lincoln and Ames. He is scheduled to end the trek by playing his last concert at the Maison symphonique At Place Des Arts in Montreal on May 22, 2019.
